Over 600 Flights Canceled, Stranding Thousands of Travelers

Every year, the week of Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel weekends in the United States, and this season is no different, with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) expecting potentially record crowds at airports throughout the country.

Unfortunately, this week, thousands of travelers at one of the country's most significant airports were left stranded or needing to make other travel plans as hundreds of flights were delayed or canceled as a result of some inclement weather in the area.

Over 500 Flights Canceled

On Saturday morning, a winter storm moved into the Chicago area, bringing as much as 10 inches of snow to some areas. As a result, flights were canceled across the city as Chicago O'Hare International Airport issued a ground stop, canceling hundreds of flights.

According to CBS News, 586 flights were canceled at O'Hare International Airport on Saturday morning, stranding thousands of travelers. Additionally, 76 flights were canceled at nearby Midway International Airport in Chicago.

All in all, over 600 flights were canceled across the cities' airports, leaving thousands of passengers scrambling for other options.

Airlines Offer Customers Options

While this is certainly an unwelcome disruption for travelers, it sounds like airlines are doing what they can to help.

As CBS reports, United and American Airlines say they have issued travel waivers and travel notices for passengers impacted by the storm in Chicago.

These travel waivers will allow their passengers some flexibility to change affected flights without fees or paying fare differences, allowing them to get where they need to go this holiday season.

Industry Continues to Feel the Strain

Earlier this month, the travel industry felt the strain from the longest government shutdown in history, as air traffic controllers and TSA agents were forced to work without pay for more than 40 days, leading to staffing shortages that caused delays and mandatory flight cuts.

While the government is now fully open and the delays in Chicago were a result of inclement weather, it sounds like travelers can continue to expect delays.

"Under normal conditions, flight cancellation rates across U.S. carriers hover around 1–2 % annually. The current spike — hundreds of flights canceled in a single day just in a handful of airports — marks a dramatic departure from ordinary operations," Travel and World reported.

"Industry‑wide, delays and cancellations have already run into the thousands per day in recent weeks. On peak days, more than 1,500 flights were canceled and over 6,000 delayed nationwide.

"The pressure on air travel is far from over: with staffing shortages still unresolved and the looming holiday‑travel surge, aviation officials warn flight disruptions may persist."
