British tourist killed in plunge from Canary Islands hotel balcony ‘after railing broke’
A British tourist has died and another is fighting for his life in the Canary Islands after falling nearly 20ft from the balcony of a hotel.
The incident happened in the Spanish resort of Costa Teguise, Lanzarote, in the early hours of this morning, when the railing of their hotel ‘gave way’.
The two Brits, aged 56 and 54, plunged to the ground – with the first dying on the spot.
The other was rushed to the intensive care unit of the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital.
His exact injuries are still unconfirmed, but he remains in critical condition.
Emergency services arrived at the scene after receiving reports of the fatal fall at around 1.30am.
Upon arrival, the health teams could only confirm the death of one of those affected.
The Civil Guard has launched an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the accident, including possible structural negligence in the hotel’s maintenance.
It is not yet known if the two British nationals were related in any way, and they are still to be named.
Local media is yet to reveal where the incident happened.
The tragedy comes just months after a long string of balcony-related falls in Ibiza.
A 22-year-old British tourist became the latest to be seriously injured after falling three storeys in the party resort of San Antonio in August.
Accidents involving British tourists in the island have skyrocketed this summer.
In late July, another British tourist was rushed to intensive care after smashing his head on the bottom of a pool.
