Legendary actress Diane Keaton died at the age of 79, Peoplereported on October 11.

While the Annie Hall star was never married, fans always assumed there was a familial connection to Batman star Michael Keaton.

Are Diane Keaton and Michael Keaton Related?

Despite their shared surname, Diane and Michael were not related. Technically, Keaton was not Diane's last name at birth.

The Godfather star was born Diane Hall to mom Deanne and dad John Newton Ignatius "Jack" Hall. After her big break in Hollywood, the actress was attempting to register with Actor's Equity. However, there was already an actress registered with the name Diane Hall.

She decided to user her mother's maiden name, Keaton, as her professional name.

How Did Diane Keaton Die?

Keaton's family released a statement following her death but gave little details surrounding the cause.

"There are no further details available at this time, and her family has asked for privacy in this moment of great sadness," a spokesperson told People.

Keaton rose to fame in the 1970s after landing a role in Coppola's The Godfather trilogy. She went on to win an Oscar for Best Actress in 1977 for her role as Annie Hall in the film of the same name. She'd later be nominated for two Emmy Awards, a Tony Award and various other prestigious honors.
