Sant Andreu and De Zaan set for Super Cup showdown in Barcelona

The women’s Super Cup will see a new champion, as either Champions League winners Sant Andreu or Euro Cup victors ZV De Zaan will lift the famous trophy on Sunday afternoon in Barcelona.

While two teams with the best Super Cup records in history clashed in the men’s final on Wednesday, where FTC edged past Pro Recco 15-14 to claim their sixth triumph, it’s a Super Cup debut for both contestants in the women’s title bout.

What’s more, De Zaan are the first side from the Netherlands ever to play for the Super Cup (when the Dutch clubs dominated in the early years of the Champions Cup, the Super Cup wasn’t held – it only started in 2006).

Spain’s Sant Andreu are considered heavy favourites for Sunday’s clash, even though the women’s finals have been less one-sided compared to the men’s, where the Champions League winners hold a 22-1 edge over the challengers since 2002.

Since the inaugural women’s Super Cup final, the overall total stands at 13-5 in favour of the Champions League winners, though the last four finals all went to the favourites comfortably. Last year, Sabadell thrashed Padova 19-7 to further cement their top rank in the all-time list with five trophies.

Later in the season, Sant Andreu caused one of the biggest upsets in recent history by upending Sabadell in the Final Four in Piraeus last May when they staged a thrilling 3-0 surge in the last three minutes to land the club’s first-ever major title on the European stage.

With five Olympic champions from Paris 2024 on board – goalkeeper Martina Terre, Paula Crespi, Nona Perez, Elena Ruiz and Paula Camus – plus that tournament’s top scorer, Australian sharpshooter Alice Williams, Sant Andreu are a real force.

The Rogge siblings, Bente and Lieke, are the top guns in De Zaan’s line-up. They have also been key players in the Netherlands’ recent successes, including the European title and Olympic bronze last season.

Bente also memorably scored the dramatic late winner against Spain in Eindhoven, with the ball bouncing in off both posts and Terre’s head with just six seconds remaining.

With a young team built around the talented siblings, it’s going to be a great test for the Dutch side to play in Barcelona for the Super Cup, and their nothing-to-lose approach may have an impact on Sunday afternoon.
