2025 REVIEW

Through his first decade in the majors, Francisco Lindor has been the quintessential all-around superstar. His 11th season proved no different, as he turned in another elite campaign while posting 6.3 fWAR, good for ninth in all of baseball and fourth among shortstops. That lifted his career total to a remarkable 60.5 after his age-31 campaign. To put that into perspective, Lindor is now ninth all-time in career fWAR among shortstops who debuted since MLB was integrated in 1947, and sixth all-time when only accounting for those who played 75% of their games at the shortstop position.

Lindor’s 2025 continued to make an impact in the record books with his second career 30-HR, 30-SB season, tying Bobby Witt Jr. for most all-time among shortstops. In addition, he’s now doubled the field in 25-HR, 25-SB seasons as a shortstop with his fourth-such year.

Yet even in another highly productive year, Lindor wasn’t immune to turbulence. This time, it was a mid-summer swoon, instead of his usual spring downward swing. His year can comfortably be broken into three distinct periods:

63 Games from March 27 through June 7:

.289/.360/.498/.858 – 14 HR, 13 SB, 23/49 BB/SO

54 Games from June 8 through August 12:

.190/.256/.335/.591 – 7 HR, 5 SB, 16/55 BB/SO

43 Games from August 23 through September 28:

.335/.433/.588/1.021 – 10 HR, 13 SB, 26/27 BB/SO

Even though Lindor enjoyed the best start to a season in his Mets career, his June and July swoon left a hole atop the lineup for a two-month stretch. Defensively, Lindor remained above-average but fell short of the Gold Glove conversation, posting the second-lowest DRS (-1) and UZR (3.5) of his career, along with a career-low 5 OAA.

In addition, his underlying metrics took a step back from his MVP-worthy 2024 campaign. Per Baseball Savant, the only clear improvement from 2024 came in whiff rate, dropping from 23.7% (54th percentile) to 20.8% (73rd percentile). He also posted the second-highest hard-hit rate of his career at 44.4%, trailing only his 47.4% mark in 2024. The most glaring drop, however, came in his barrel rate, which went from a career-high 13.6 % barrel rate (90th percentile) to 8.8% (47th percentile). Ultimately, much of his underlying metrics were in line, or better, than his career norms.

It’s important to note Lindor suffered a fractured pinky toe on June 4, which coincides with his tough stretch. Looking deeper into his splits, the injury seemed to have hampered him the most from the right side of the plate:

Despite the toe clearly affecting him in the field and at the plate, Lindor played in all but two games in 2025. One can’t help but wonder if, in an alternate timeline, Lindor had taken a week or two off, perhaps his dip in production wouldn’t have been as pronounced or prolonged. A healthier Lindor in July might have swung a few more games in favor of the Mets.

In the end, another excellent year helped Lindor continue his climb up the Flushing leaderboards. He now ranks eleventh all-time in bWAR as a Met, and sixth all-time among position players. He also set a Mets record with his fourth-consecutive 5+ WAR season as a position player (Tom Seaver holds the overall mark with an absurd ten straight to begin his career).

2026 OVERVIEW

Moving forward, Lindor remains under contract at $34,150,000 per season through 2031. While he took a step back defensively in 2025, he still has a firm hold on his position. However, given he’ll begin next year at 32-years-old, how his production ages will of course be monitored.

It remains to be seen how much Lindor continues his ascension amongst the pantheon of Mets and MLB shortstop greats in 2026. Or if any whispers of a ‘C’ being placed on his chest will move past mistakenly posted MLB videos.

The blockbuster trade that brought Lindor over from Cleveland in the winter of 2021 already ranks among the greatest in franchise history. Whether Mets brass can build a team around him capable of delivering the championship that’s eluded Queens for forty years will define his Mets legacy.
