We've tried lots of loafers in our day. Our guide to the best loafers for women had us testing dozens upon dozens of styles — from Gucci's iconic horsebit shoes to budget picks from Amazon. And after years of trying loafers at every price point, we crowned the Everlane Modern Loafer our hard-won champion.
Not only are loafers a great aesthetic piece to have in your wardrobe, but they're also remarkably comfortable. Made of soft leather and fitted with arch support, they've quickly become a go-to for us. Here's why we love them.
The style is exceedingly versatile

The Everlane Modern Loafer is available in three colors: Black, Camel, and a darker brown called Rum. These neutrals are versatile and very corporate-approved if you're planning to use them as work shoes.
Plus, the slim silhouette is much more timeless than the chunky takes on loafers that go in and out of style. This variety — with a slim heel and minimal sole — is classic and enduring.
They're seriously comfortable

Here's how it feels to wear the Everlane Modern Loafer, according to Sally Kaplan, executive editor, Maria Del Russo, former style and beauty editor, and Katie Decker-Jacoby, former style and beauty reviews fellow.
Sally: "The new loafers are supple, round-toed, and flexible, but not so bendy that they feel like flats or smoking slippers. They have good arch support, and the rubber soles have lots of traction."
Maria: "I didn't need to break these in at all. They also offered great arch support on my daily walks around the block."
Katie: "The foam-cushioned insole was great and helped to eliminate any arch soreness or break-in time."
But beware of sizing issues
Everlane recommends going with your usual size, but we're not entirely convinced. While each of our testers had their own experience, we'll just say this: the fit may not be true to size for everyone. In general, we found the shoes run narrow, so you may want to consider sizing up.
Sally: "I always get a size 8 in Everlane shoes, though I'm usually somewhere between a 7.5 and 8 in other brands. If you're between sizes, go up a half size since they tend to run a little small. And if you have wide feet, you may even want to go up a full size."
Katie: "This loafer has a very narrow fit. I got my usual size 6 and was surprised by the fit because I already have quite slender feet. However, my feet adapted, and the narrowness ultimately helped to prevent my heels from sliding out.
Maria: "I originally ordered my normal size, which is a size 8, and was unable to get my feet into the loafer. My feet are wider across the ball than they are at the heel, so I needed to trade in for a size 9. But once I got the right size, I was sold."
The bottom line
This loafer has been around since the very early days of the brand — in fact, this was the product that really put Everlane on the map. And we are huge fans of the Everlane Modern Loafer.
It's versatile, comfortable, and passed all our tests. But across all of our reviews of Everlane's new loafer, each tester experienced a narrower fit, with one person having to go up a full size. We recommend sizing up if you're between sizes or have wider feet.
