Albany FireWolves relocating to southern Ontario
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Albany FireWolves are becoming the second National Lacrosse League (NLL) franchise within the Greater Toronto Area. After a vote on August 14 by the NLL Board of Governors, the team will relocate to Oshawa, Ontario, before the 2025-2026 season.
The NLL announced the relocation on August 19, stating the Albany FireWolves will begin a new chapter in the Durham Region along Lake Ontario's coastline. The team plans to keep its name for the upcoming season, and further branding developments will be announced in the coming weeks.
Alongside the Ontario Hockey League's Oshawa Generals, the Tribute Communities Centre will become the FireWolves' new facility. As the NLL's youngest team, NLL Commissioner Brett Frood said the relocation is pivotal for both the franchise and the league.
"Oshawa sits within one of the core epicenters of the indoor lacrosse world in Ontario, and the Tribute Communities Centre provides the perfect stage for us to deliver an incredible experience for all NLL constituents," Frood said. "The energy and passion of the sports’ fans in this area make this an ideal home for the franchise and our league."
A statement from the organization expressed deep gratitude to the fans and MVP Arena General Manager Bob Belber for his leadership and for providing them with a facility to thrive in. Albany FireWolves CEO Oliver Marti said the relocation is a new challenge and a huge opportunity.
"As the NLL continues to grow, we are excited to bring world-class lacrosse to Oshawa while enhancing regional rivalries," Marti said. "We also look forward to growing with our new community while never forgetting the fans and supporters who have been part of our journey in Albany."
