Aston Villa interested in surprise transfer approach for Bundesliga winger: report

Aston Villa are considering an attempt to sign Bayer Leverkusen winger Amine Adli, according to reports.

Adli caught Villa’s eye as part of Xabi Alonso’s double-winning squad in 2023/24 and Monchi is monitoring his status with a view to an approach in the current transfer window, according to reports.

If Villa do have an interest in Adli, they could face serious competition. GiveMeSport reports that AFC Bournemouth are in for the 25-year-old along with another Premier League quartet of Wolverhampton Wanderers, West Ham United, Fulham and Crystal Palace.

Adli and Leverkusen are apparently open to parting ways if his price tag of £26 million is met. The Morocco international is keen to seek a new challenge in his career and favours a move to England and the Premier League.

Leverkusen have undergone a number of changes in personnel since Alonso’s departure to Real Madrid at the end of last season. Jeremie Frimpong, Granit Xhaka, Jonathan Tah and Florian Wirtz have already left this summer, mostly for Premier League clubs.

Adli’s style of play

The French-born Moroccan could bring a different dimension to Unai Emery’s squad. He can operate on either flank and cut inside, using his impressive dribbling ability, as well as playing more centrally as a second striker or attacking midfielder. He has pace and presses with determination.

Adli has played 143 games since joining Leverkusen in 2021, contributing 23 goals and 25 assists in all competitions. Like so many of his teammates, Adli’s best season in Germany was a prolific title-winning invincible season in the Bundesliga.

He created both goals in a vital victory over Bayern Munich in March 2023 and has been rewarded with 15 senior international caps for France.

Injury concerns

One thing Villa and any other suitors will be wary of is Adli’s injury record. The former Toulouse winger has suffered three serious setbacks in his time as a Bundesliga player.

At the end of 2021/22 he was forced out by a ruptured Achilles tendon. A broken collarbone followed, ruling him out for five weeks early in the following season. Last season, he was condemned to the sidelines for five months by a broken fibula.

Each of these injuries happened in isolation and shouldn’t be too off-putting for clubs with a genuine interest in buying him and robust processes and medicals to ensure there’s no cause for alarm.

Villa’s bigger issue is one of financial affordability and priorities, but that’s a whole different story.
