Expect delays on Steel Bridge for upcoming daytime closures

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Transportation officials are warning drivers in Portland to allow extra travel time if they’re passing over the Steel Bridge, as its lanes will close during the day starting Monday.

According to the Oregon Department of Transportation, the closures will take place intermittently Aug. 18 to 22.

The closures are due to mandatory inspections every two years. ODOT says these can also happen any time there is an incident that may cause damage, such as a crash or flooding.

Drivers should plan for alternative routes, including the ones below from ODOT:

Detours

When northbound OR 99W lane is closed:

• Detour will use the Broadway Bridge to cross the Willamette River from the west side to the east side of Portland.

When southbound OR 99W lane is closed:

• Detour will use the Burnside Bridge to cross from the east side to the west side.

While ODOT has not provided the exact times for these upcoming closures, they said they will not close both northbound and southbound bridge lanes at the same time.

Given this, officials encourage commuters to visit TripCheck for the most current travel conditions before hitting the road.

However, the Steel Bridge will remain open to pedestrians, cyclists and MAX trains, officials said.
