NYSP investigating death at Upstate Correctional Facility

MALONE, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- An investigation is underway after a man incarcerated at the Upstate Correctional Facility in Malone was allegedly strangled in his cell, according to New York State Police. An autopsy has reportedly ruled the death of 35-year-old Antawon Johnson to be a homicide.

At about 8 p.m. on Thursday, correction officers were conducting their rounds when they found blood in a cell and Johnson lying on the floor, unconscious and not breathing, State Police said. A correction officer reportedly began life-saving measures and Johnson was taken to the infirmary, where he received medical care and was later pronounced dead.

According to authorities, a subsequent investigation found that Johnson had allegedly gotten into a fight with his cellmate, 28-year-old Arkies Sommerville, prior to his death. Authorities said they found a bedsheet and shoelace around Johnson's neck, which they believe led to him falling unconscious.

An autopsy was performed at Glens Falls Hospital on Saturday. Johnson's cause of death was determined to be asphyxiation due to strangulation, according to State Police.
