Man drowns at Becket Quarry in Berkshire Co.
BECKET, Mass. (NEWS10) -- Berkshire County authorities have recovered the body of a man that reportedly drowned in Becket Quarry on Friday. The victim was in his 20s, according to officials.
The Berkshire State Police Detective Unit was called to the quarry at about 5:36 p.m. A preliminary investigation reportedly found that the victim and a woman were swimming across the water when he began to struggle and quickly became submerged.
"Based on statements from individuals who witnessed the drowning, the victim went under the water in a matter of seconds," said Berkshire County District Attorney Timothy Shugrue.
The woman and other people on the shore attempted to find and rescue the man but were unsuccessful, authorities said.
Multiple Berkshire County dive teams reportedly conducted a physical search of the water before turning to an underwater rover for assistance. The rover successfully located the victim's body but experienced a malfunction and had to return to the surface, officials said.
Dive teams returned to Becket Quarry on Saturday and were able to recover the victim's body.
"The Berkshires have experienced a number of drownings, from children to adults, in the past few years," Shugrue said. "In this hot weather, I urge all residents to practice safety and vigilance while swimming in lakes, rivers and pools. Even strong swimmers must take safety precautions in the water."
