Beitbridge West MP calls for interventions to stop vandalism and theft of key infrastructure

Beitbridge West legislator Cde Thusani Ndou has raised concerns over the rising cases of vandalism and theft of key infrastructure in the area, including solar panels, irrigation equipment, electricity equipment and communications equipment.

He said the theft and vandalism of these critical assets are not only disrupting essential services but also posing significant financial losses to the Government and ordinary people.

The Member of Parliament called on community members to ensure they secure critical infrastructure to avoid derailing development and the envisaged Government rural transformation programme.

While addressing stakeholders during an interaction meeting by the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Albert Nguluvhe on Friday, he said, vandalism and theft had reached alarming levels in the area.

“The continued vandalism and theft of solar panels and related equipment is affecting the provision of electricity, particularly in rural areas where solar power is a primary source of energy in some public institutions,” said Cde Ndou.

“On the other hand the vandalism of irrigation equipment is impacting agricultural productivity and food security. We need to shift from this mindset as a community.

“You will note that theft and vandalism of infrastructure often disrupts economic activities”.

Cde Ndou said it was necessary for the community to guard key infrastructure and prevent further vandalism and theft.

He said local communities can play a vital role in monitoring and reporting suspicious activities to the authorities.

“It critical that we collectively as community leaders keep educating the public about the impact of vandalism and theft on development and service delivery,” added Cde Ndou.

Speaking during the same meeting, Minister Nguluvhe encouraged community members to support the police by creating vibrant neighbourhood watch committees or crime prevention committees at the grassroots or village level. @tupeyo
