NYC's 'hub' takeover sparks concerns as illegal activities spread

NEW YORK (PIX11) – The City’s recent takeover of the Hub, a bustling commercial district in the South Bronx, has been marred by reports of drug and illegal activities being pushed into neighboring areas.
The development prompted concerns among residents and local businesses, as the city’s cleanup efforts seemed to be creating new challenges.
Friday, a heavy NYPD presence remained at Roberto Clemente Plaza, the heart of the Hub, following the city’s decision to barricade the area to combat rising illegal activities. However, neighbors report that these measures have only led to the spread of problems to nearby blocks and subway stops.
Mayor Eric Adams, while announcing the expansion of a pilot program targeting 25 high-crime blocks with intense policing, acknowledged the issue.
“You have someone who’s dealing with either severe mental health illness or homelessness, they will go to another location," Adams said. "We have to meet them there and offer them services.”
Adams emphasized the importance of building trust with both troubled individuals and neighbors.
The Mayor’s office has committed to maintaining direct contact with residents and businesses during focused efforts, such as the one at the Hub. This has already resulted in a cleanup effort just a couple of blocks away at a nearby park.
Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Kaz Daughtry reported the collection of over 275 needles and providing services to those in need.
