NY, NJ see record-breaking temperatures amid extreme heat
NEW YORK (PIX11) --- New York and New Jersey have seen record-breaking temperatures amid the extreme heat that has gripped the tri-state area Monday.
The temperatures in Newark and Islip hit 101 and 93, respectively, beating their previous records, according to the National Weather Service. Newark's previous high was 99 degrees in 2024, and Islip's was 91 back in 1999.
Central Park hit a record-tying temperature of 96 degrees, according to the NWS.
Meanwhile, the heat index reached 113 degrees on Staten Island Monday, meaning it felt like 113, according to NYC Emergency Management.
"At this level, the human body struggles to cool itself. Prolonged exposure or physical activity can quickly lead to heat stroke," the agency posted on X.
Dangerous heat will affect the tri-state area through Wednesday before a cold front brings relief to the region.
An extreme heat warning is in effect through Tuesday evening for much of New York and New Jersey. We can expect hazy, hot, and humid conditions on Monday afternoon with temperatures that will approach records levels.
The highs were forecast to be 96 in the city, upper-90s to near 100 degrees for inland areas and mid to upper-80s over coastal spots. The humidity will combine with the temperature to make it feel like 105-109 degrees in spots.
