Troy splash pads help families stay cool, save energy
TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Amid this intense heat, families may be looking for a way to cool off while saving energy. As temperatures rise, so does the demand on the power grid.
“We have extra crews that are available to respond to any outages that we may see in the next couple of days, and you know other than that, we’re really just urging customers to stay as comfortable as they can, but at the same time, try to conserve energy where it makes sense," said National Grid spokesperson Patrick Stella.
Stella said there are small steps that families can take to save energy. These include keeping curtains closed and limiting air conditioner use to the rooms you're in.
Some families are also using community resources to stay safe and cool. Because they don’t rely on electricity, splash pads give families a break from the heat without burdening the power grid.
“It gives opportunities of lower income that don’t get access to A/C, cooling units, water, anything like that, it gives them access to that, so it’s really just a great opportunity for the community to have these because there’s a lot of children who don’t have access to those things," said Megan Harrington and Riley.
Splash pads across the Capital Region are free and open to the public. You can find lists of splash pads, pools and cooling centers on the NEWS10 website.
