Bruins Sign Young Defenseman To Contract Extension
The Boston Bruins signed defenseman Mason Lohrei to a two-year contract extension with an annual $3.2 million cap hit, the team announced Monday.
The 24-year-old was set to become a restricted free agent on July 1 if the two sides couldn’t come to an agreement on a new contract.
Lohrei skated in 77 games during the 2024-25 season and totaled five goals with 28 assists for 33 points. The young defenseman has played 118 career NHL games, scoring nine goals and 37 assists for 46 points.
The 6-foot-5, 220-pound defenseman was drafted by Boston in the second round of the 2020 NHL Draft.
While Lohrei showed a lot of offensive upside during the season, he struggled defensively with young mistakes. He had an NHL-worst minus-43 while also averaging 19:32 of ice time per game, ranked fifth among Bruins defensemen.
Locking down Lohrei for two more years gives him more time to grow on the blue line. The two years can help the young player grow more into his role on the defense with the Bruins.
Boston will likely look to sign their other RFAs, including forwards Morgan Geekie, Jakub Lauko, John Beecher and Marat Khusnutdinov. Boston also has the 2025 NHL Draft coming up June 27 where they will pick at No.7 in the first round.
