Albany mayor candidate discusses the issues with NEWS10
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) - There will be a new mayor in the city of Albany come January of 2026. Kathy Sheehan is not running for re-election and four Democrats are trying to replace her.
One of them is Albany's chief auditor Dorcey Applyrs. She also represented the city's First Ward between 2013 and 2017. Now she wants the mayor's office.
Applyrs top priorities include affordability, economic development, and public safety. The Democrat says the policy of just adding more police officers will not make the city safer. She says it goes beyond just law enforcement.
"We have to put the public back in public safety," said Applyrs. She adds, "and ensure that the community is a part of our larger city public safety response." Applyrs is calling for more recruitment, and retainment of police officers and doubling down on community policing.
Applyrs sat down with News10's KC Kantz to discuss the issues facing the city of Albany.
