The valet at an extravagant Montreal institution, like Toqué! or Maison Boulud, might raise an eyebrow if you were to pull up and hand over the keys to the 2025 Ram 1500 Tungsten. The valet’s skepticism would be understandable, since pickups aren’t typically the first vehicle that comes to mind when you think luxury or sophistication. But, this isn’t a typical pickup, as the valet would discover upon climbing into the opulent cabin.

The Tungsten, sitting atop the Ram brand’s refreshed 1500 lineup, embodies a fascinating contradiction. It’s a vehicle of extremes: extreme luxury and extreme capability. And on both fronts, the Tungsten refuses to compromise. One day it can ferry you to a posh restaurant in the lap of luxury, the next it can haul you and your family and your speedboat to the lake for a day on the water.

Practical Opulence

On the outside, to the untrained eye, it looks much the same as other Ram 1500 models, albeit with a bespoke grille and judicious application of chrome trim. On the inside, however, its split personality becomes evident.

Step inside the Tungsten — as that valet might — and you’d be pleasantly surprised. The incredibly spacious cabin puts some interiors from big luxury brands to shame. The Indigo and Sea Salt full-leather interior wraps around 24-way power seats with a massage function. The trim is done with contrast stitching and fine piping. The materials are not your usual pickup-truck fare: diamond knurled metal accents, suede-wrapped pillars and brushed aluminium. On the dashboard, a cutting edge 14.5-inch touchscreen handles all major functions, while a segment-first 10.25-inch passenger screen allows your co-pilot additional control without disturbing your view.

The centre console proudly displays a Tungsten badge with inlaid metal lettering and your truck’s unique VIN; it’s a not-so-subtle reminder that this vehicle was proudly crafted, not merely assembled.

Weekend Warrior

It’s a lovely place to be, even when stuck in the inevitable long-weekend traffic up to cottage country in Muskoka, or out to Gull Lake between Edmonton and Calgary.

For any weekend warrior heading out for a day on the water, the Tungsten’s new Hurricane High Output straight-six turbo engine churns out 540-horsepower and 521 lb-ft of torque. With towing capacity of up to 10,740 lb (4,872 kg) on this model, you’ll have more than enough power to haul a glistening metal Airstream travel trailer that’d be spacious enough for a family. The cargo bed could hold e-bikes for everyone as well. This kind of setup could take you and yours on an epic cross-country tour, stopping at all the National Parks, and anywhere else you can possibly imagine. It’d be an unforgettable journey.

The hands-free Driving Assist systems would help make long highway stretches less tedious and more relaxing, while the Active-Level 4 Corner Air Suspension — which automatically lowers at highway speeds — maximizes both aerodynamics and ride quality.

Alternatively, with over 10,000 lb of towing capacity, the Tungsten could haul a nice 25-foot fishing boat, or any number of high-end wake boats to your lake of choice, all without breaking a sweat. The advanced camera system provides multiple views, making hitching and manoeuvring a boat trailer remarkably simple. The digital rearview mirror with tow mode ensures visibility even with a trailer attached.

Thanks to a new 2-kilowatt onboard inverter, you can plug in a power washer and hose down the boat before hauling it home. Or, if there’s nowhere to stop for coffee, plug in an espresso maker and brew your own.

Split Personality

The cost of a 2025 Ram 1500 Tungsten competes with the finest luxury vehicles, but its split personality means you get the same decadent amenities, but with a whole lot more legroom, versatility and capability.
