Police investigating 17-year-old shot in Opelousas, remains in critical condition
OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY) -- Police are investigating a shooting that occurred in St. Landry Parish that has left a 17-year-old victim in critical condition.
At approximately 10:49 p.m. Saturday night, the Opelousas Police Department was notified by staff at Opelousas General Hospital that a 17-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the head had arrived at the facility by private vehicle.
Officials said based on witness interviews and further investigation, it was determined that the incident occurred at a residence in the 900 block of Garland Avenue.
According to authorities, the victim remains in critical condition and has been transferred to a regional trauma center for advanced medical treatment.
While the early investigation points toward an accidental shooting, police say the case remains open and charges have not been ruled out at this time.
