Artist applications open for Pittsfield mural projects
PITTSFIELD, Mass. (NEWS10) -- Artist applications are open for two mural projects in Pittsfield, one in the Morningside neighborhood and the other in the downtown area. Officials with Downtown Pittsfield, Inc. announced the mural projects on Monday, and applications are due by June 20 at 5 p.m. to be considered.
Artists should send in to-scale, full-color concept sketches before the June 20 deadline, and whoever is selected for the projects can expect to collaborate with the community members and the property owner in the ideation phase. The artists also receive feedback from a panel of 15 community members.
After feedback is collected, the artist is expected to make minor changes to the design before submitting the final copy. The overall goal for the murals is to foster a more colorful and inclusive cityscape.
Mural details
Morningside neighborhood
- Location: 288 Tyler St., across from Morningside Elementary School
- Size: 18 feet by 50 feet
- Artist stipend: $18,000
- Completion deadline: October 31, 2025 (Spring 2026 may be considered)
The Morningside neighborhood mural will be directly across the street from Morningside Elementary School and visible to students, families, and residents. The building where the mural will be painted was once a local fruit market, and the building owner is part of the business's family legacy.
Because of the fruit market's legacy, the artist selected for the Morningside mural is encouraged to reflect the legacy in their design as a way to honor the neighborhood's history. The wall will be prepped before the painting process begins, and the artist is responsible for supplying their paint, sealant, and materials in addition to lodging and travel accommodations.
Downtown Pittsfield
- Location: 7 North St.
- Size: 30 by 40 feet
- Artist stipend: $18,000
- Completion deadline: October 31, 2025 (Spring 2026 may be considered)
The downtown mural will occupy a high-visibility brick wall, organized by Let It Shine! Public Arts Partnership. An overall mission for the mural is to add color to the North Street corridor and bring more dynamic, large-scale murals across downtown.
Whoever is selected for the downtown mural project can expect lifts and wall prep to be provided. Like the Morningside neighborhood project, the artist is responsible for their paint, sealant, materials, and any travel accommodations.
