Marble-sized hail expected with thunderstorms to hit Yosemite Wednesday

A report was issued from the National Weather Service on Wednesday at 1:51 p.m. for strong thunderstorms in effect until 2:30 p.m. for Yosemite.

The storms could bring marble-sized hail (0.5 inches).

“At 1:49 p.m., Doppler radar tracked a strong thunderstorm 9 miles northeast of Yosemite Valley, or 19 miles southwest of Lee Vining, moving southeast at 10 mph,” according to the NWS Hanford CA. “Accumulating hail on roadways is possible.”

Locations impacted by the alert include May Lake High Sierra Camp, Sunrise High Sierra Camp, Snow Flat, Tenaya Lake and Tuolumne Meadows.

According to the NWS, “Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle. This storm may intensify, so be certain to monitor local radio stations and available television stations for additional information and possible warnings from the National Weather Service.”
