Women's Health Wednesday: Sexual Assault Awareness
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) - April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The initiative aims to address and prevent sexual abuse, assault, and harassment through education and understanding.
The National Sexual Violence Resource Center launched a campaign that focuses on enhancing public understanding of sexual violence, amplifying the voices of survivors, and empowering people to work together to promote the safety and well-being of others. Their theme for Sexual Assault Awareness Month is, "Together We Act, United We Change."
According to the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey, more than 43% of women have experienced sexual violence in their lifetimes.
In this week's Women's Health Wednesday, Nancy Harris, a Nurse Practitioner and manager of the forensic nursing program for St. Peter's Health Partners, shares insight into the issue and the local supports available to people in need.
The New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence also provides resources online and will observe activities throughout the month to continue the conversation.
For anyone in need of immediate assistance, there is a Sexual Violence Crisis Hotline that is available 24/7 by calling this number: (518) 271-3257.
