19-year-old killed after tire hits windshield, investigators looking for second driver
LOGAN COUNTY, Okla. (KFOR) — A search is underway for a driver pulling a trailer on Northbound I-35. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said a tire flew off that trailer and caused a deadly crash Tuesday.
"I've never had a tragedy this sad before, and so it is a worst-case scenario," said Mark Southall, with OHP.
19-year-old Josh Hicks was heading to visit family for spring break when a tire bounced over the median and went through his windshield.
Hicks crashed and died.
The deadly accident happened just before 3 p.m. near Industrial Road in Logan County.
"We're hoping that somebody will come forward and tell us that they saw a vehicle with a trailer missing a tire on the interstate, and maybe we can pull some information together from cameras and flock cameras around the city," said Southall.
Investigators said it's possible the driver pulling the trailer did not realize they were missing a tire.
"We believe that this could be a tandem-axle utility trailer, and so losing a wheel isn't something that you may or may not notice until he or she gets stopped," said Southall.
Hicks was a freshman at Kansas State University. His father told News 4 that his son loved his family and was strong in his faith.
Hicks' family and investigators are asking the person driving to come forward.
"We just need answers to questions, so we can figure out exactly how this happened and get this closure to the family," said Southall.
