A$AP Rocky Is Bringing Back Puma Tech From the ’90s for His Next Sneaker Collaboration
A$AP Rocky and Puma are once again taking on the Mostro, but with a look entirely different than their 3D-printed versions from last year.
The A$AP Rocky x Puma Mostro Disccord makes use of the Disc System, a speed-lacing technology introduced in 1991 and predating Boa by a decade. Puma has revisited the Disc over intermittent periods in the years since, but never before had it applied the system of internal wires and dial to the Mostro until Rocky’s intervention.
Debuting in all-black, the Mostro Disccord maintains the familiar lines and spikes of its ancestor while reconfiguring the upper with a more complex and structured layout with oblong cutouts. A carbon fiber midfoot shank adds further reinforcements, and the lone departure from pure black, and the Formstripe is given a warped quilting.
The Mostro Disccord is the third silhouette for Rocky and Puma’s partnership, following the Mostro 3D slip-on and Inhale — or the fourth if you differentiate between his Inhale Mesh and Inhale Distressed. It’s also one of many more deviations for the Mostro after the 1999 sneaker got a relaunch last year to become one of the German brand’s headliners.
“Coming off the last drops with the Mostro 3D, Rocky wanted innovation to drive its next evolution,” Jon Tang, Puma’s lead footwear designer for the Rocky and Rihanna lines told Hypebeast in an interview published Monday. “The Mostro always had the vector strap and alternative lacing, so when we thought about a new take, the Disc system came to mind. It had never been done on the Mostro before, and as soon as we realized that, we knew it was the perfect fit.”
The A$AP Rocky x Puma Disccord will release March 27 through Puma’s website and select third-party retailers. Pricing is set at $200.
