World of flavors at GlobalCafe
One of the perks of working at the behemoth Luther Forest plant, which currently has 1,300 employees and isn't yet fully staffed, is a cafeteria supplying food as good or better than at any semiconductor plant in the world, according to workers who have been to many.
[...] because GlobalCafe, as it's called, is subsidized by the company, prices for fresh, high-quality food are generally lower than at a local diner:
A plateful of that churrasco steak, broccoli raab, potatoes and a head of roasted garlic — or as much as would fit in a to-go container — cost $7.99.
Restaurant mogul Angelo Mazzone and his team won the competitive bid to oversee retail dining and catering for GlobalFoundries after more than two years of running a temporary cafeteria in a tent to feed the 1,200 construction workers who built the site.
The cafe, finished in the 10 months since the contract was announced, abuts a seating area with a capacity of about 550 that is also used for company meetings and teleconferences with GlobalFoundries' other plants in Germany and Singapore.
The adjacent American Grill serves variations on meat and potatoes, and a Mediterranean station features Italian, Greek, Spanish and Middle Eastern food, plus sandwiches, panini, vegetarian fare and gourmet pizza.
