Sixties Spectacular
The most remarkable aspects of the Sixties Spectacular, Mark Volman says, are the longevity of the acts and their appreciation of it.
The Turtles best-known song was "Happy Together," which, when released in 1967, knocked the Beatles' "Penny Lane" from the No. 1 slot on Billboard.
The Turtles other hits included "She'd Rather Be With Me," "It Ain't Me Babe," "You Showed Me" and "Elenore."
When you ask him about the dream of becoming a rock 'n' roll star, he laughs and throws back the word nightmare.
Volman recalls that the judge looked down at them with their long hair and said something like: "If your parents are going to let you look like that, then I'm going to let you sign this contract."
Eager merely to record and make music, Volman and the Turtles signed away not only 100 percent of their publishing rights but also the Turtles name and even their own names if they left White Whale.
Volman was Flo, short for Phlorescent Leech, a name he and Kaylan had given a member of the Turtles road crew named Carlos — ''a flamboyant Hispanic, a vivacious guy, Volman says.
In addition to teaching and touring he manages the Turtles, booking the shows, arranging hotels and travel.
