Cowboys Rally to Beat Arkansas in Double Overtime
Oklahoma State's football team got a touchdown from Ollie Gordon in the second overtime, then held Arkansas out of the end zone to beat the Razorbacks 39-31 at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater on Saturday.
Gordon scored on 12-yard touchdown run, then caught a two point conversion pass from Alan Bowman to give OSU a 39-31 lead in the second OT.
It was the high moment for Gordon in what was otherwise a tough day, as he was held to 49 yards rushing on 17 carries.
When Arkansas got the ball in the second OT, OSU stopped Rodney Hill on 4th and 1 from the 6-yard line to end the game.
Arkansas outgained OSU 648-to-385 in total yards, but the Razorbacks had three key turnovers that led to 10 OSU points.
OSU trailed 21-7 at halftime and did not have an offensive score.
Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green passed for 416 yards, completing 26 of 45 pass attempts, and also added 61 yards rushing on 18 carries.
Bowman was 27-for-48 for 326 yards, with a touchdown and an interception.
The Cowboys got the ball first and moved into Arkansas territory.
On 4th and 1 from the Razorbacks' 20 yard-line, Alan Bowman's pass was broken up by Jaylon Braxton and Arkansas took over on downs.
Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green gained 31 yards on a run to get into OSU territory, but on 3rd and 3 from the OSU 27, Green was sacked by Jeff Roberson and the Hogs had to punt.
OSU took over on their own 1-yard line and gained just two yards before they had to punt as well.
Arkansas took over at the OSU 45-yard line and took six plays to score.
Green gained 17 yards on the first play, and Ja'Quinden Jackson finished the drive on a 5-yard touchdown run to put the Razorbacks up 7-0 with 5:52 to play in the first quarter.
Jackson had 149 yards rushing on 24 carries.
OSU gained just one first down and had to punt on their ensuing possession.
Arkansas then went 83 yards in 8 plays to add to their lead.
On 3rd and 12, the Razorbacks picked up a first down on a 23-yard run by Green.
Jackson then scored on a 5-yard touchdown run two plays later and Arkansas led 14-0 with 1:31 to play in the first quarter.
After an OSU punt, Arkansas was moving the ball again when Green was intercepted by Kale Smith, who returned it 73 yards for a touchdown to get the Cowboys on the board and cut the Razorbacks' lead to 14-7 with 8:50 to play in the second quarter.
Arkansas got a 32-yard pass from Green to Isaac Teslaa to get into OSU territory.
On the next play, Jackson had the ball knocked out by Kale Smith after a 16-yard gain.
Nick Martin recovered for OSU at their own 28-yard line, and the Cowboy defense apparently had their second straight turnover.
On replay review it was determined Jackson's knee was down when he fumbled and Arkansas retained possession.
Three plays later, Arkansas scored on an 11-yard touchdown run by Jackson, finishing off a 75-yard drive in seven plays to put the Razorbacks up 21-7 with 5:05 to play in the first half.
Oklahoma State then turned the ball back to Arkansas, as Alan Bowman's deep pass was intercepted by Jaheim Singletary at the Razorbacks' 35-yard line with 1:38 left in the first half.
Oklahoma State forced an Arkansas punt on their opening possession of the second half.
The Cowboys quickly moved the ball down field, and appeared to have scored on an 8-yard touchdown pass from Bowman to Brennan Presley.
The play was nullified, however, by a personal foul penalty on Jake Schultz for an illegal block.
OSU had to settle for a 45-yard field goal by Logan Ward to cut the Razorbacks' lead to 21-10 with 6:45 to play in the third quarter.
Arkansas turned the ball over on their ensuing possession, as Jackson fumbled a pitch and Kody Walterscheid recovered for OSU at the Razorbacks' 49-yard line.
OSU's drive bogged down due to a penalty and they had to settle for a 35-yard field goal by Logan Ward to trim the Arkansas lead to 21-13 with 39 seconds left in the third quarter.
Arkansas moved the ball into Cowboy territory, then kicker Kyle Ramsey missed a 41-yard field goal attempt wide right and it stayed 21-13 with 11:44 to play.
OSU was forced to punt on the ensuing possession, but Arkansas returner Isaiah Sategna muffed the punt and Shea Freibaum recovered for the Cowboys at the Arkansas 25-yard line.
On the next play, Bowman passed to Rashod Owens for 18 yards to the Arkansas 7.
Then Bowman found Brennan Presley for a 7-yard touchdown to cut the Arkansas lead to 21-19 with 9:37 to play.
Presley had 9 catches for 91 yards.
OSU went for two points and tied it at 21 when Bowman passed to De'Zhaun Stribling for the conversion.
Arkansas got a 26-yard run from Jackson to get into OSU territory, but on 4th and 4 from the OSU 23-yard line, Green gained just three yards and the Razorbacks turned the ball over on downs with 6:45 to play.
The Cowboys then went 80 yards in five plays, with the big play a 63-yard pass from Bowman to Jake Schultz to the Arkansas 8-yard line.
Brennan Presley finished the drive on a 3-yard touchdown run to put OSU up 28-21 with 5:13 left.
Arkansas' offense came alive and answered in just three plays, finishing off a 75-yard drive when Green passed to a wide open Luke Hasz for a 43-yard touchdown to tie it at 28 with 4:01 to play.
OSU got a big play in response, with Bowman passing to Presley for a gain of 36 yards to the Arkansas 6-yard line.
On the play, Bowman was called for a personal foul for taunting, and the ball was moved back to the 21.
The Cowboys had to settle for a 38-yard field goal from Ward to take a 31-28 lead with 55 seconds to play.
Arkansas had time to get the game tied, and Green passed to Andrew Armstrong for a gain of 33 yards to the OSU 27-yard line.
Armstrong led all receivers with 10 catches for 164 yards.
As time expired in regulation, Kyle Ramsey kicked a 45-yard field goal to tie the game at 31 and force overtime.
Arkansas got the ball first in overtime, but OSU's defense made two big plays to move the Razorbacks back.
Nick Martin made a tackle for a loss of six yards, and Obi Ezeigbo sacked Green on 3rd and 13, taking the ball back to the OSU 28-yard line.
From there, Ramsey missed a 46-yard field goal wide left, giving OSU a chance to win it on their first possession in overtime.
OSU gained just one yard on offense, and Ward missed a 41-yard field goal attempt wide right, taking the game to a second overtime.
The two teams were meeting for the first time since 1980.
At halftime, former OSU defensive end Leslie O'Neal was enshrined in the Ring of Honor at Boone Pickens Stadium.
OSU improves to 2-0 on the season.
The Cowboys will visit Tulsa next Saturday at 11:00 am.
