The best TV and film to watch this week – From Emily in Paris to The Grand Tour

A HOST of new movies and shows are premiering this week as a number of fan-favourite series like Emily in Paris and Dora also return to the screen.

The Sun’s TV Mag has rounded up the best of the best for the next seven days.

NETFLIX

The Circle – Available from Wednesday

Netflix
The Circle is back, but with a twist[/caption]

Who’s for a spot of catfishing? Get excited because The Circle spins back on to our screens for a shiny seventh series, promising more drama, twists and social media skullduggery.

Host Michelle Buteau is in charge once again, as a new set of contestants move into the swanky apartment building in Atlanta, Georgia, hoping to plot, post and potentially fake-persona their way to the position of most popular person and that all-important winning prize of $1million.

As ever, the contestants will stop at nothing to be crowned catfishing top-dog – but who’s got what it takes? The first four episodes drop this week, with four more landing on 18 September and 25 September, ahead of the grand finale on 2 October.

Emily in ParisAvailable from Thursday

GIULIA PARMIGIANI/NETFLIX
Emily in Paris brings more drama and an Italian plot twist in Series 4: Part 2[/caption]

Thankfully, fans of Emily in Paris haven’t had too long to wait for the second half of the new series. Barely has the varnish had time to dry on the American expat’s (Lily Collins) expensively manicured fingernails than it’s time to head to the French capital once again.

If you’ve not watched the first five episodes of this fourth season, perhaps look away now because spoilers await. Emily might be back with Gabriel but with the shocking revelation ready to drop that his ex, Camille, isn’t pregnant with his baby after all, emotions could get messy.

Meanwhile, Emily’s professional life is looking equally precarious, after she fibbed about the origins of the amazing skincare product that Agence Grateau have been promoting – don’t tell anyone, but it’s actually a sexual lubricant. Oops. Another whimsical helping of French-flavoured frothy romantic comedy.

Billionaire IslandAvailable from Thursday

Netflix
Fishing turns into an all out turf war when billionaires are involved[/caption]

There’s something very fishy about this quirky comedy-drama series from Norway, quite literally, because it follows the fortunes – and misfortunes – of two fish-farming companies.

When Julie (Trine Wiggen), the ruthless owner of one of those companies, plots a hostile takeover of her local rival, hoping to become the world’s largest salmon producer, it sparks a vicious, tit-for-tat turf war, which threatens to destroy both companies. Filled with oddball characters, shocking twists and a bracingly bleak coastal Norwegian backdrop, it promises to be plenty of fun for anyone who enjoyed Lilyhammer (it’s made by the same people) or the recent Boat Story.

Ángel Di María: Breaking Down WallsAvailable from Thursday

Angel di Maria is breaking down walls in this upcoming documentary[/caption]

Ángel Di María might not be hugely popular in Manchester – after all, his wife famously said life in the city was “horrible” during his ill-fated time playing for Man United – but there’s little argument that he’s been one of the most exciting footballers Argentina has produced in recent years.

This in-depth docuseries chats to the former Real Madrid, Juventus and PSG star about his life and career, focussing on the struggles he’s overcome to reach the top.

With contributions from his family, friends and teammates, including Lionel Messi, don’t expect it to be particularly balanced – it’s essentially an exercise in telling the world how great Ángel is – but there’s still plenty for football fans to dig into.

UgliesAvailable from Friday

Joey King is worlds away from the Kissing Booth in her latest Netflix movie
Brian Douglas/Netflix © 2024

Rising star Joey King impresses in this thought-provoking dystopian sci-fi thriller, which transports us to a world where the way you look is everything. Hmm… sounds rather familiar, yes?

Well, in this all-too-possible near future, all young people are given cosmetic surgery when they turn 16, allowing them to change their appearance in whatever way they like.

Teenager Tally (Joey) is looking forward to when her time comes. But when she sets off on a search for a friend who’s run away, Tally discovers that discontent is bubbling beneath this society’s seemingly perfect surface, and that perhaps happiness isn’t all about how you look.

Officer Black BeltAvailable from Friday

If a series about using martial arts to fight off criminals and keep the community safe piques your interest Officer Black Belt is a must-watch
Soyun Jeon/Seowoo Jung/Netflix © 2024

When a police officer is rescued from some unpleasant characters by Lee Jung-do (Kim Woo-bin), a martial arts whizz in Taekwondo, Judo and Kendo, probation officer Kim Sun-min realises this fun-loving but extraordinary young man could come in handy when it comes to taking down hardened criminals.

Signed up to the police force, it isn’t long before Jung-do finds himself in the middle of some testing cases – but armed with black-belt abilities, he’s got all the weapons he needs to keep the community safe, and criminals at bay. Strap in for some hard-hitting, high-kicking action-comedy fun.

The Grand Tour: One For The RoadAvailable from Friday

Prime Video
Jeremy, Richard and James are gearing up for one last adventure[/caption]

Every road trip has to end somewhere – and for The Grand Tour, it’s Zimbabwe. Yes, after eight years of laughter, pranks, camaraderie and cars, Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond are leaving their massively successful show behind, but not before exploring this stunningly beautiful African nation.

The intrepid trio will get behind the wheels of three cars they’ve always wanted to own – for Jeremy, it’s a 1982 Lancia Montecarlo; for James, a 1974 Triumph Stag; and Richard opts for a 1974 Ford Capri. They motor over mountains, across dusty planes and past some breathtaking wildlife, but – of course, this being The Grand Tour – it won’t always be a smooth ride, so expect all manner of mishaps, map misreading and mechanical malfunctions, and a surprisingly nostalgic ending.

The 90s was the era when the fashion industry collided with celebrity, music, film and culture like never before.

This six-part series tells the story of that highly creative decade, seen through the eyes of a host of people who were there at the epicentre. Among them are former Vogue editor Anna Wintour, models Kate Moss, Claudia Schiffer and Naomi Campbell, designers Tom Ford, Vera Wang and Jean Paul Gaultier, Hollywood big hitters Nicole Kidman, Elizabeth Hurley and Gwyneth Paltrow, and pop icons such as Victoria Beckham and Mary J. Blige.

The result is a glamorous and star-studded guide to 10 years that changed fashion forever. The first three episodes strut on to our screens this week, with the remaining three set to hit the televisual catwalk next week.

Lego Star Wars: Rebuild The GalaxyAvailable from Friday

Some familiar faces are heading on a new adventure around the galaxy[/caption]

When ordinary nerf-herder Sig Greebling (voiced by Stranger Things’ Gaten Matarazzo) unearths a mysterious and powerful artefact from a hidden Jedi temple, the entire Star Wars galaxy finds itself completely jumbled up. With the good guys bad and the bad guys good, can Sig find a way to put things back to normal?

Filled with humour and fan-pleasing references, this is a must for Star Wars obsessives both young and old. And what makes the four-part series even more special is that a host of Star Wars legends from down the years will be lending their voices, including Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian, Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico, and even Ahmed Best as Jar Jar Binks as we’ve never seen him before.

CHANNEL 4

Walter Presents: 1985Available from Friday

Channel 4
1985 transports viewers to another time, but with a dark twist[/caption]

The so-called Brabant Killers were responsible for a horrifying spree of violent crimes and murders in Belgium during the early 1980s.

These killings, which remain the country’s most infamous unsolved crimes, provide the inspiration for this tense thriller – brought to us by Walter Presents. Beginning in 1980, the series follows young best friends Marc (Tijmen Govaerts) and Franky (Aimé Claeys) and Franky’s sister Vicky (Mona Mina Leon), as they leave home and move to the Belgian capital Brussels, filled with hopes for the future.

But instead, the trio find themselves being drawn into the shocking events surrounding the Brabant Killers. A tale of loss of innocence, told with pace and impressive period details, it’s a must for fans of shows like Deutschland 83.

VIAPLAY

TaelgiaAvailable from Monday

Viaplay
Taelgia is another exiting crime thriller coming this week[/caption]

Who’s in the mood for some deliciously bleak Scandi noir? Welcome to the mean streets of Södertälje, not far from Stockholm, where the lives of the locals, the police and dangerous criminals collide. When 16-year-old Gabriel (John Hanna) finds himself having to move to an uncompromising housing estate, he bonds with drug-dealing Marko.

It isn’t long before the two teens are sucked into the dangerous world of crime that surrounds them – and with debts owed by Gabriel’s family, the pressure soon builds. Can the two youngsters find a way out, or is a life of crime their only destiny?

PARAMOUNT+

DoraAvailable from Friday

Paramount+
Dora is ready for exploring in the latest series of the kids show[/caption]

Few kids’ shows manage to reach the dizzying levels of multi-coloured cuteness scaled by Dora, which returns for a second series of adventure-filled, bilingual animation.

As ever, the intrepid youngster (voiced by Diana Zermeño) will be setting off on some action-packed escapades in the surprise-filled rainforest, joined by her brave best friend Boots the monkey (Asher Colton Spence), the all-knowing Map and plenty of other familiar faces. Of course, it’s never a straightforward stroll in the park and there’s always mischief brewing, usually in the form of cheeky thieving fox Swiper.

Rubble & CrewAvailable from Saturday

Paramount+
PAW PATROL’s exciting Rubble-centric spin-off is making its way to the screen this week[/caption]

Rubble’s ready for action! But there’s no Ryder here as the PAW Patrol bulldog goes it alone with his family in this spin-off where they get to work in Builder Cove – the neighbouring town to Adventure Bay. Rubble and his construction crew – Mix, Charger, Wheeler and Motor – are ready and willing to build anything the town needs, from bridges, tunnels and parks, to a station, schools and new airport.

Perfect pre-school fun, the first three episodes drop this week, with more new instalments to follow weekly after that.

TV Mag is available for free every Saturday, only in The Sun.
