‘Inside Out 2’ On the Doorstep of Animation’s First $100 Million 2nd Weekend at Box Office
Depending on how Sunday plays out, Disney/Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” could make box office history as the first animated film — and only the seventh overall — to gross $100 million in North America on its second weekend in theaters.
As it stands, Disney is currently estimating that the sequel will reach that $100 million mark right on the button, giving it a running domestic cume of $355 million. That’s $4 million ahead of the pace of “Barbie” after 10 days.
With this pace, “Inside Out 2” is now a lock to become the first Disney-released animated film to gross $1 billion worldwide since “Frozen II” in the winter of 2019, having passed “Dune: Part Two” with $724 million worldwide to become the highest grossing film of the year after just two weekends.
With just a 37% drop from its $155 million opening weekend, it is also posting the lowest percentage drop ever for a film with an opening of $150 million or more.
While the family film is driving the box office, theaters are getting secondary support from some other films. Sony’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” continues to hold very well with $19 million in its third weekend, giving it a domestic total of $147 million.
In third is the sole newcomer to the top 5: Focus Features/New Regency’s “The Bikeriders,” which is hitting the top end of pre-release projections with a $10 million opening from 2,642 theaters. The film will need to leg out and get some help from premium on-demand and other home platforms, as it carries a reported $40 million production budget financed by New Regency.
Delayed from its initial December 2023 release due to the SAG-AFTRA strike and moving from 20th Century Studios to Focus, the Jeff Nichols crime drama has been generally well received with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 82% critics and 75% audience.
In a tie for fourth are May holdovers “The Garfield Movie” and “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” both with $3.6 million. “Garfield,” released by Sony, now has a domestic total of $85 million and $230 million worldwide, while “Apes,” released by Disney/20th Century, has $164 million grossed in North America and more than $380 million worldwide.
Other specialty films also entered the market, including Searchlight’s “Kinds of Kindness” and Magnolia Pictures’ “Thelma.” For more on their runs, check out our specialty box office report.
