‘Baby Reindeer,’ ‘Ripley’ and ‘Shōgun’ dominate Television Critics Association Awards nominations
For the second year in a row, three shows have topped the Television Critics Association nominations. “Baby Reindeer,” “Ripley” and “Shōgun” lead Monday’s nominations for the 40th annual awards with five bids each.
All three shows are up for Program of the Year, a category dominated by FX and Netflix. The former fielded three nominees with “Shōgun” “The Bear” and “Reservation Dogs,” while the latter is repped by “Baby Reindeer” and “Ripley.” Max’s “Hacks” is the sole non-FX and non-Netflix nominee.
Last year, “Succession,” “The Last of Us” and “The Bear” scored five nominations apiece. “Succession” and “The Bear” wound up with two wins each, with the former taking Program of the Year, but “The Last of Us” went 0-5.
After expanding to eight slots per category in 2021, TCA has reverted to six slots. No reason was given.
More curious, however, is the unprecedented double-dipping by three shows. “Baby Reindeer” and “Ripley,” two limited series, and “Fargo,” an anthology series, are nominated in both the limited series/TV movie/specials category and the drama category. No reason was given for this either. The first three seasons of “Fargo” were nominated in limited series/TV movie/specials but never in drama.

In limited, the trio are up against “The Fall of the House of Usher,” “Fellow Travelers” and “The Sympathizer.” In drama, they face “Fallout,” “Shōgun” and “True Detective: Night Country.” Ten years ago, when the first season of “True Detective,” an anthology series, went drama at the Emmys, TCA categorized the HBO hit in limited, which it won.
The nomination leaders also combined take four of the six spots in Individual Achievement in Drama with “Baby Reindeer” creator and star Richard Gadd, “Ripley” star Andrew Scott, and “Shōgun” duo Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai. “True Detective: Night Country’s” Jodie Foster and “Fargo’s” Juno Temple are the other nominees. Last year’s winner was “Better Call Saul’s” Rhea Seehorn, who became the eight consecutive female champ and the first supporting performer to triumph in the category’s 27-year existence.
“Baby Reindeer,” “Ripley” and “Shōgun” will also vie for new program honors against “Fallout,” “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” and “X-Men ’97.”
In comedy, “The Bear,” which snagged the second most bids with four, will try to defend its series crown in a field with 2022 champ “Abbott Elementary,” “Girls5eva,” “Hacks,” “Reservation Dogs” and “We Are Lady Parts.”
With reigning champ Natasha Lyonne (“Poker Face”) ineligible in Individual Achievement in Comedy, 2021 winner Jean Smart (“Hacks”) and 2022 winner Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”) will look to reclaim the title against Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”), Renée Elise Goldsberry (“Girls5eva”), Devery Jacobs (“Reservation Dogs”) and Jeremy Allen White (“The Bear”).
Unsurprisingly, FX and Netflix lead the way with 16 nominations each. HBO and Max combine for 13 total.
Winners will be announced Friday, July 12 at the first in-person TCA Awards ceremony since 2019. Recipients of the Career Achievement and Heritage Awards will be announced then as well.
