Victoria Beckham Recalled the Infuriating Ways Newspapers Told Her to Lose Weight After Giving Birth

Get ready for your blood to boil. So we all remember those intrusive, awful magazine covers where editors would call out celebrity women for having natural things like stretch marks, cellulite, and weight? Yeah, it’s still very bad now, but back in the 1990s, they did some insanely infuriating things to new celebrity moms, including marking where they could’ve lost weight right after giving birth.

Sadly, this happened to Victoria Beckham right after she and her husband David Beckham welcomed their first child Brooklyn, in 1999.

In a recent interview with Grazia, Victoria talked about how the newspapers crushed her self-esteem when they picked apart her body after she gave literal birth.

“I’ve had so much said about me and I’m sure that has robbed me of some experiences. I never want to look like I’m complaining, but there were times in my past that I haven’t felt confident enough to sit on a bench and watch my children play,” she heartbreakingly said. “I remember after I had Brooklyn, the first outing was on the front page of the newspaper, with arrows pointing to where I needed to lose weight.

She added, “Those things can affect how you feel and conduct yourself in public. Now, if paparazzi want to take a picture and say something — too bad, it doesn’t bother me in the same way.”

Sadly, this isn’t the first time she’s talked about something awful like this happening.

In a previous interview for Vogue Australia’s July 2022 issue, published online via The Australian, Victoria explained that while she’d lost weight quickly after giving birth, just like her own mother had, she talked about one scarring moment: when she was publicly weighed on TV in 1999 on Don’t Forget Your Toothbrush with Chris Evans. 

“He made me stand on the scales to be weighed,” Beckham said. “Can you imagine doing that nowadays?” 

This is beyond appalling, and Victoria deserves an apology for the huge amount of pressure she got after giving birth.

For those who don’t know, Victoria and David first met in 1997 at a charity football match, and they hit it off right away. Around a year later, in 1998, they got engaged, and on July 4, 1999, they got married at Luttrellstown Castle near Dublin, Ireland.

David and Victoria have welcomed four children since 1999: Brooklyn, born on March 4, 1999, Romeo, born on Sept 1, 2002, Cruz, born on Feb 20, 2005, and Harper Seven, born on July 10, 2011.
