Sunday Shows Preview: Eyes on Trump's 2024 veepstakes; Senate border bill fails again

This week’s Sunday news shows will likely focus on who will become former President Trump’s running mate.

The competition for Trump’s vice presidential slot has been seemingly heating up recently, with some of the possible contenders stopping by the former president’s hush money trial in New York, including Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), who will appear on “Fox News Sunday” this week. Donalds also was at Trump’s rally in the Bronx this week, according to The Associated Press.

Another contender for Trump’s VP slot, Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), will appear on CNN’s “State of The Union” this week. Scott criticized new TV and radio ads from the Biden campaign that were rolled out this week that target Trump on his claims about his record with Black Americans, stating that the current president’s record on race is “disgusting, it’s vile, and it’s un-American.”

A bipartisan border bill was shot down for the second time this year in the Senate Thursday in a 43-50 vote this week, which will also be a likely focus of this week's Sunday shows. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), one of the negotiators of the proposal, will appear on CBS’ “Face the Nation” this week.

In a Thursday post on the social media platform X before the vote, Murphy said Republicans would "likely" kill the bipartisan border security bill because "Trump told them to keep the border a mess because it helps Trump in the fall election.”

President Biden went after Republicans for blocking the border security legislation after it failed again in the Senate.

“Congressional Republicans do not care about securing the border or fixing America’s broken immigration system. If they did, they would have voted for the toughest border enforcement in history. Instead, today, they put partisan politics ahead of our country’s national security,” Biden said in a statement.

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), who will appear on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures” this week, and Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) heavily critiqued the bipartisan border bill in a Wednesday opinion piece for The Hill. In the piece, the two right-wing firebrand senators stated that the bill was “rushed” and “made behind closed doors without input from most Republicans.”

“The bill would also codify Biden’s catch-and-release policies, as it actually requires illegal aliens to be released while they are being processed,” the two senators said in the opinion piece. “The American people are just supposed to accept that millions of poorly vetted illegal aliens will continue to move into their communities, taking their jobs, overcrowding their schools and driving up rent prices, but now with the federal government’s explicit imprimatur.”

“The bill also spends $20 billion that we don’t have, further mortgaging our children’s future,” the piece continues. “It primarily spends the money, not to secure the border, but to more efficiently process and disperse illegal immigrants throughout America — the vast majority of whom do not have valid asylum claims.”
