The best looks worn at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival so far, and the ones that missed the mark
- The 2024 Cannes Film Festival is now underway in France.
- So far, stars like Meryl Streep and Naomi Campbell have worn fashion-forward outfits.
- But a few celebrities have also missed the mark with their outfits.
It's that time of year again: the Cannes Film Festival is underway in France.
It's an opportunity for movies to be screened in front of film royalty and for beloved celebrities, young actors, models, and other stars to showcase their stunning fashion on the event's red carpets.
And so far, people like Meryl Streep and Naomi Campbell have done just that.
Here's what they've worn — and some celebrity outfits that have missed the mark.
She arrived wearing a blue-and-white striped dress from Maison Margiela's spring/summer 2024 collection and white Tabi stilettos.
The former piece had a pleated midi skirt, a fitted waist, and thick shoulder straps embellished with squares at the top, making the dress resemble paper doll clothes.
She attended the same photo event as Gerwig, and also chose to wear blue-and-white stripes. But Streep did so via a button-up blouse tucked into white high-waisted pants with pleats.
She also wore a long white blazer, silver pumps, black sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat. Michael Kors designed her outfit.
She walked the "Le Deuxième Acte" red carpet in a black Elie Saab jumpsuit and leopard-print duster.
Either piece might have worked fine on its own. But together, they meshed too many details.
Her suit alone featured a floral appliqué crafted from pink and black beads, and its pants were so long that they extended past her metallic heels.
Her off-the-shoulder gown had black sparkles across its sweetheart neckline, big crystal buttons down its form-fitting bodice, and a white skirt with a thigh-high slit.
The latter piece also extended into a short train that mirrored the round style of her diamond choker necklace.
Hill perfected the custom Balmain look with black sandals, a pixie haircut, diamond jewelry, and smoky makeup.
He arrived at the first 2024 Cannes screening wearing a sheer blouse with a thin train, black trousers, and a white blazer.
But his outfit didn't stop there. He also added shining dress shoes, glowing makeup, and a diamond necklace with an aquamarine pendant.
The base layer of her strapless gown was full of intricate details. Its corset top was sheer and embellished with braided cups, while its floor-length skirt had hip slits and fabric hanging at her thighs.
But on top of the daring look sat a golden corset decorated with metal roses.
The outfit was futuristic and different but also a little too busy for a glamorous red carpet.
The Saiid Kobeisy gown was crafted from voluminous red satin. It featured a wrapped bodice, off-the-shoulder sleeves, and a bubble skirt that cascaded behind Klum in thick layers.
Its overall design was stunning and made the supermodel look like a princess. But the look could have been even better with a few tweaks.
Bigger diamond jewelry could have added some much-needed sparkle, and stiletto sandals would have fit the dress better than pumps. It might also have been nice to see Klum wear the dress with its straps styled as they were on the designer's runway.
Styled by Law Roach, Campbell wore a semi-sheer Chanel gown from 1997. The piece had pearl straps, a square bodice covered in black sequins, and a mesh skirt lined by thick stripes of the same sparkles.
She wore the dazzling dress with pointed pumps and long diamond earrings.
She wore an asymmetrical Fendi dress that was white up top, darkened at the bottom in shades of gray and black, and covered in delicate crystals. It also had a single sleeve that extended to the floor.
While it looked unique and daring from behind with its backless design and more prominent ombré effect, the dress was underwhelming from the front.
The former Miss Universe winner donned a black bodysuit underneath a long-sleeved gown.
The latter piece was made from mesh, had a skirt that reached the floor, and showed Mittenaere's black pumps through its tall skirt slits.
But it was an assortment of golden pieces across the chest, back, and sleeves that made the garment especially daring, almost like a wearable art piece.
He walked the "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" red carpet wearing a silk suit in an eggshell shade.
Its color was unique, the shining material looked luxurious, and its structure stood out from other classic suits with wide-leg trousers and a blazer fitted at the waist.
After a disappointing Met Gala appearance, Hemsworth had an opportunity to wear something especially fun at Cannes.
But instead, he opted to wear another simple suit. His look included black pants, shiny dress shoes, and a cream blazer over a white top.
Of course, Hemsworth looks great in everything he wears. But not experimenting with a new style on the French red carpet feels like a missed chance.
She arrived on the red carpet wearing a sheer mesh gown in a tan shade. Its bodice and parts of its skirt were decorated with gold sequins, while lace and a few orange lines ran down the dress.
The musician wore the gown with a matching veil that sat atop her head and cascaded to the floor.
Loewe custom-made her eggshell-colored look, which had long sleeves with shoulder pads, a long pleated skirt, and a rolled exaggerated waistband.
Though the dress was elegant, its style was dated and didn't match Plaza's vibrant personality. Something more youthful would have worked better.
The model walked the "Megalopolis" red carpet in a gray suit printed with swirled lines in a darker gray shade.
Not only was the print unique and fun, but it also complemented the unique shape of his suit. His pants were long and wide, and his blazer featured strong shoulder pads and a fitted waist.
The "Saltburn" actor has made a name for himself as a rising fashion star with a daring wardrobe.
But the latter wasn't present when he walked the "Bird" red carpet on Thursday. He wore only black dress pants, a ruffled white top, and a gray blazer.
Though he looked dapper, his outfit wasn't the most memorable.
Her burgundy Louis Vuitton gown was sleeveless with a plunging neckline that reached her navel.
The dress was also covered top to bottom in rows of sequins, and its tiered skirt reached the floor via a short train.
Stone wore the piece with delicate earrings and a crystal-encrusted cuff on her wrist.
She wore a black dress from Gucci with mesh shoulder straps and a straight skirt that reached the floor.
It was an elegant piece but extremely simple. Dunst's thin diamond necklace wasn't enough to bring it to light.
A thicker necklace, layered bracelets, or a few statement rings would have enhanced the overall look.
For the "Kinds of Kindness" red carpet, Longoria sported a sparkling halter dress with a V-neckline that dipped below her chest.
The mermaid-shaped gown also had thin slits across its bodice and skirt, which partially revealed her skin beneath.
The dress shimmered and stunned on its own. But Longoria made it look even better with a thick diamond necklace above it.
The Zuhair Murad gown had a see-through skirt that was edgy, fun, and perfect for a Cannes red carpet. But its sheer bodice looked as though it was missing a panel.
Justice also wore a thin necklace with the sparkling dress when a thicker piece with brighter sparkles would have worked better with her outfit.
