Push to provide plant-based lunch options in schools
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Some nutrition advocates want to make plant-based foods more accessible in schools. New York State lawmakers are considering a bill that would require schools to provide plant-based meals to students who request them at no additional cost to their families.
Supporters said it would help encourage healthy eating habits from an early age and give students more options.
"It's a problem when kids who are really dependent on school meals go to school and can't find food to eat," Amie Hamlin, Co-founder and Exec. Dir. of Coalition for Healthy School Food, said. "It's an extra burden on their families, and unfortunately, it's those children who are more dependent on the school meals."
Advocates said a number of districts around the state have already adopted the practice. The bill is currently in committee.
