The Daily Gazette switches hands after 130 years
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- The Daily Gazette has switched ownership to publisher John DeAugustine of Saratoga Springs. The newspaper has been in the Hume-Lind family for 130 years, and the sale was a 12-year effort with the family, The Daily Gazette board, and employees.
DeAugustine became the paper's publisher in 2013 and brought more than 20 years of experience from Hearst Corporation to the business. He also created new revenue streams by acquiring other family-owned newspapers, such as the Amsterdam Recorder, The Leader-Herald, Nippertown, The Daily Mail, and Register Star.
The Daily Gazette has been in the Hume-Lind family since its inception in 1894 and was passed down to the fourth and fifth-generation owners, Betsie Hume-Lind. She is the Daily Gazette Board President and said there's a lot of pride in passing on the torch to a family that values newspapers.
Hume-Lind added that DeAugsutine's work over the years adds to the family's confidence in passing the business on to a new owner. "We all truly appreciate how much John and his family have done for the paper over the years, and we know they are committed to its future success and will continue to provide independent local news backed by the highest journalistic standards and integrity," she said.
