I’m a dry cleaner & it’s infuriating when people throw out stained pillows – my minimal effort $1 method whitens them
IF your pillow is on the yellow side, a simple cleaning technique will have it looking as good as new.
A professional dry cleaner revealed the budget-friendly item he swears by for whitening and brightening.
In his viral video, Jeeves (@jeeves_ny) showed his followers the best way to wash their pillows.
The Instagrammer explained that he was making the post in response to a comment that said pillows should be thrown out once they become discolored.
“Comments like this are infuriating especially when the solution is super simple,” he said.
Jeeves showed his audience a side-by-side comparison of his pillow before and after carrying out his hack.
“I spent about $1 on cleaning products and [it took] minimal effort to get this pillow back to new,” he said.
For his first step, he filled his sink with water, which he said was 140 degrees Fahrenheit.
Jeeves then added powdered oxygen bleach, available to purchase at Dollar Tree.
He left the pillow to soak overnight, explaining that the bleach needed time to set in.
After removing the pillow from the water Jeeves washed it as normal, in his machine.
He placed the pillow in his dryer alongside a handful of dryer balls and fluffed it up.
According to the expert, this simple trick can not only save you money but also it also helps the environment.
He cited information from Changing Markets that stated that the clothes industry is a bigger contributor to climate change than the international aviation industry and shipping combined.
While Jeeves heaped on the praise for his hack, he did not recommend using it on memory foam pillows.
His followers shared their thoughts on the advice in the comments section.
“My husband has a bamboo pillow, just running it in the washer wasn’t cutting it so I did what you’ve done here,” wrote one viewer.
Tip to remove yellow sweat stains
Yellow armpit stains affects everyone, whether people care to admit to it or not. But there is help at hand. To remove yellow stains from your clothing, experts recommend the following methods:
- Baking soda paste: The pros at The Laundry Cafe recommend mixing one tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide with one tablespoon of salt, and ½ cup of baking soda. Apply directly to the stain with a toothbrush, rub, and let the mixture sit for at least an hour, then wash as normal.
- Oxygen bleach: This method is just as useful for removing yellow stains. Mix one part of oxygen-based bleach with one part of ammonia in a non-metal bowl. Wear gloves during this application. Rub into the fabric with a toothbrush and allow the solution to sit for at least ten minutes before laundering as normal.
- Stain remover or detergent: Stains on collars can be stubborn to remove as armpit stains. So pretreat the area using a solvent-based stain-removing agent or detergent. Work the product into the collar with a toothbrush and allow it to sit for at least ten minutes before washing.
