From wonky noses to big bums & a model with a ‘five head’ – the body quirks that make celebs like Gisele irresistible
SHE’S one of the most famous and stunning supermodels in the world, but even Gisele Bündchen was once told she wasn’t pretty enough to make it on the catwalk.
“I remember some people telling me my nose was too big or my eyes were too small, that I could never be on a magazine cover,” she once said – proving, well and truly, that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Considering she went on to become the highest-paid supermodel in the world and dated the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, the fact Gisele was judged for her looks is even crazier.
But, in a world where everyone strives for perfection, it’s hardly surprising, and there’s even a scientific theory known as the ‘Golden Ratio’ – which is essentially the sum that explains how stereotypical beauty works.
Dr Ahmed El Muntasar, GP and owner of The Aesthetics Clinic says: “Centuries ago, Greek sculptor Phidias created ‘Phi’ – a Golden Ratio that reveals the ideal proportion.
“Measure your face and divide the length by the width. The closer you are to the ideal figure (roughly 1.62), the more appealing you are to the eye.”
Sound confusing? Essentially the theory is a visually balanced face is approximately 1.62 times longer than it is wide – so you measure the length, and then the width, and divide the length by the width to get your figure.
According to the Golden Ratio, actor Chris Hemsworth is one of the most attractive men in the world, while Killing Eve star Jodie Comer is the most attractive woman, with her face shape matching the perfect ratio by 94.9 per cent.
But there is always an exception to the ‘rule’, and, as Plastic Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgeon Mark Solomos explains: “It’s little imperfections that create real perfection.
“Look at Gisele Bundchen’s nose for example – it’s not ‘perfect’ but that’s what sets her apart from the rest.
“In this world where everyone wants to have the same uniform aesthetics – cat eyes, pouty lips or a tiny upturned nose – it is beneficial to break the mould.”
Here, with the help of the experts, we take a closer look at how celebs and your own once-hated self-perceived ‘flaws’ could be your biggest asset.
Rejected and told to get a nose job
Gisele isn’t the only famous face who faced scrutiny and pressure to get plastic surgery on their nose.
Actress Lea Michele, 37, previously revealed: “I love my nose because it’s mine.
“From a very young age, I must’ve been maybe only 13 years old, I started being told… that I was going to have to get a nose job.
“I didn’t want to do that… I wanted to look at my face and have it be my face. And why I’m so grateful that I chose that.
10 Most Beautiful Women In The World
This top ten list was compiled by a Harley Street clinic surgeon, Dr Julian De Silva, who used digital facial mapping to see how modern celebs matched up to the Golden Ratio measurement of 1.62, with Jodie Comer closest to the ideal figure...
1: Jodie Comer – 94.52%
2: Zendaya – 94.37%
3: Bella Hadid – 94.35%
4: Beyoncé – 92.44%
5: Ariana Grande – 91.81%
6: Taylor Swift – 91.64%
7: Jourdan Dunn – 91.39%
8: Kim Kardashian – 91.28%
9: Deepika Padukone 91.22%
10: HoYeon Jung – 89.63%
“I did move to Los Angeles and I ended up landing a role that, maybe if I had looked different, I wouldn’t have gotten the job.”
Medical Director of Cosmedics Skin Clinics Dr Ross Perry says: “Lea Michele, is incredibly talented and confident, and with that confidence, she appears attractive.
“Yes, she’s not a traditional ‘beauty’ in the sense of Hollywood standards, but she is unique.
“The more you observe her in her work as an artist, her features blend to become who she is – a beautiful individual who doesn’t conform to the Hollywood ideal.”
Beauty spot ‘good enough for Vogue’
Growing up, Cindy Crawford, 58, was mocked for the mole on her lip and it was seen as “an ugly mark”.
Then, when she first started modelling, there was always a question about whether to cover it with makeup – and it was edited out from her first major magazine cover.
“The jury was still out [at that time],” Cindy recalled when speaking about the incident.
But after she graced two American Vogue covers, scrutiny over her blemish subsided, and she previously said: “It was never a discussion again because it was kind of like the Vogue seal of approval.
“If it’s good enough for Vogue, it’s good enough for everyone.”
Dr Ross Perry says: “Cindy Crawford’s mole, is the epitome of what we would call a ‘beauty spot’.
“She almost invented it and it only added to her allure and beauty combined with the rest of her near-perfect features to become the supermodel of the 90’s.
“The mole was in fact, neat, pretty and was just another attribute and an identifying feature of hers.”
Accepting wrinkles & loosening skin
She’s one of the world’s most successful actresses, with her own lifestyle brand, but Gwyneth Paltrow, 51, has set a good example for other women when it comes to her approach to ageing.
She previously said: “While I do what I can to strive for good health and longevity, to stave off weakening muscles and receding bone, I have a mantra I insert into those reckless thoughts that try to derail me: I accept.
“I accept the marks and the loosening skin, the wrinkles.
“I accept my body and let go of the need to be perfect, look perfect, defy gravity, defy logic, defy humanity. I accept my humanity.”
Dr Ross Perry says: “Gwyneth Paltrow is an actress in her early 50’s.
“She looks incredible for her age and clearly looks after herself.
“If we saw Gwyneth looking frozen and line-free, it would question who she is as an actress.
“Therefore by embracing the lines and wrinkles, she still looks beautiful and good for her age rather than competing with someone 20 years younger.”
Strong ‘big butt’ & legs
Orange Is The New Black actress Dascha Polanco says she used to be bullied for her shapely derriere.
She told Today: “I used to be made fun of for having a big butt – a “watermelon ass,” they’d call it – and big legs.
“Now I reflect on it, and I realise my butt matches my legs. They look good together.
“This is mass. This is volume. This is strength. This is what makes me Dascha and what makes me unique from anyone else.”
Dr Ross Perry says: “In today’s society having a large derriere is seen as an extremely attractive feature on a woman, again we all come in different shapes and sizes and genetics play a huge part.
“It isn’t something we should be ashamed of and having confidence and embracing who you are as an individual is seen as beautiful to many.”

Tyra Banks, 50, made a career out of critiquing other women on America’s Next Top Model, but when it came to her features, she has been criticised heavily for her forehead.
However, speaking on the Today Show, Tyra revealed she was ‘thankful’ for it, and said: “So I have a very large forehead. Some people call it a five-head, and maybe even a six or a seven.
“When I turned into a supermodel, a lot of people were saying, ‘She’s cute, but she’s got a big forehead.’
“But what I have to thank my forehead for is my modelling agent said if I didn’t have a high forehead, I would’ve been too safe-looking and too commercial-looking.”
Dr Ross Perry says: “Tyra Banks is a unique beauty and a true supermodel in appearance.
“Her features are stunning, and it has proved to be successful in terms of her modelling career.”
Finally, Consultant Plastic Surgeon Mr Tunc Tiryaki, adds: “There are two primary factors that contribute to attractiveness. Firstly, harmony and balance, which don’t necessitate perfection.
“Secondly, self-confidence. Being comfortable and content in your own skin is crucial; it doesn’t demand perfection, as that’s neither attainable nor enduring.”
