Ninth person pleads guilty in nationwide marijuana trafficking case
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A ninth person has pleaded guilty to their involvement in a nationwide marijuana trafficking and money laundering conspiracy, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Onisha Smith, 41, of Brooklyn, admitted to being a part of trafficking thousands of kilograms of marijuana and THC across the country as well as laundering the proceeds for the organization.
It is alleged that thousands of kilograms of marijuana and THC were trafficked from Fresno, California to places throughout the United States, including the Capital Region. Over 20 people were indicted on charges relating to this, including Smith's brother, Lateek White.
Smith also admitted to laundering the marijuana proceeds by purchasing cashier's checks with the cash proceeds for Singletary, depositing cash into her bank account, and transferring the money to Singletary. She would also receive payment for marijuana and transfer it to the organization.
The defendant will face up to 20 years in prison for conspiring to distribute marijuana and conspiring to commit money laundering. She will also face fines of up to $1 million and $500,000 respectively and probation of up to three years to life.
