I cleaned an apartment where every room was riddled with mold – my 3-step method gets rid of every type for good
THERE is no one-step cure-all for tackling mold in your home.
A professional cleaner revealed the three steps she swears by for mold removal.
In her viral video, Bea (@cleanwithbea) broke down each of her steps as she used them in a client’s home.
She explained that every room of the woman’s apartment was “riddled with mold.”
“Literally every single room had a different type of mold that was at a different level of growth,” Bea told her followers.
For her first step, she sprayed the affected areas of each room with white vinegar and left it to sit for an hour before wiping it with a clean dish sponge.
The cleaning expert also highlighted the potential hazard of using her three recommended products too close together, leaving the vinegar to dry overnight.
Experts at Service Master Restore explained the science behind white vinegar as a method of mold removal.
“The acetic acid that is present in vinegar has a decently strong pH of 2.5,” they wrote.
“Because of this strong pH level, vinegar is able to disrupt and stop the growth of mold, fungi, and other organisms.”
Using PPE, Bea sprayed 3% hydrogen peroxide on the moldy areas and let it sit for 15 minutes before wiping it away.
“Hydrogen peroxide penetrates really deeply so effectively, this is killing anything that the vinegar missed,” she said.
The Green Orchard Group broke down the role of hydrogen peroxide in tackling mold.
“It acts by releasing oxygen at a rapid rate, which kills mold by oxidizing the surface and breaking down proteins and DNA,” they explained.
After leaving the rooms to dry out overnight, Bea used a bleach-based mold spray as her final weapon against the mold infestation.
The experts at Healthline pointed out the effectiveness of bleach when tackling mold on non-porous surfaces such as baths and sinks.
“While bleach may be a solution for nonporous surfaces, it can’t get to the root of mold and kill it entirely on porous surfaces, such as drywall and hardwood floors,” they wrote.
Cleaning tips to elevate your home
Realtor Stephanie Booth shared her go-to cleaning tips with The U.S. Sun.
- Use dish soap and baking soda to scrub your stovetop and kitchen cabinets.
- Clean your carpets, dishwasher, and under appliances as soon as you move in.
- Make a crockpot potpourri of sliced lemons, vanilla, a sprig of rosemary, and two cups of water.
- Fluff your pillows but don’t worry about karate-chopping them.
Bea recommended keeping your humidity levels low, at 55 or below, to prevent mold regrowth.
Her followers shared their thoughts on the advice in the comments section.
“I literally have mold in most rooms and your videos give me hope that I can get it mold-free,” wrote one viewer.
“I was so surprised how much difference just using white vinegar did,” said another TikTok user.
“I’m going to be doing the same for my own bathroom ceiling soon,” commented a third person.
“I need to do this to my bathroom, we have no fan so it is kind of moldy in there,” shared another follower.
“I live in a tropical climate where mold thrives. This is so helpful, thank you!” said one viewer.
