Revamping the area ahead of the warmer days can create the illusion of having more space.
Jeannette Hudson is the furniture expert at the UK-based company Online Sofa Shop.
Speaking to The U.S. Sun, she revealed the key factors to consider for enhancing a small patio.
FENCE FIX
“You can create the illusion of spaciousness in your small patio, without breaking the bank,” Hudson said.
“The right color scheme can significantly impact the perceived size of your patio.
“Lighter hues, such as whites, creams, and pastels, can make the space feel airy and open.
“Consider painting walls or fences in pale colors and using light-colored furniture and accessories to enhance this effect.”
She revealed that keeping the space bright around the clock is equally important.
“A variety of lighting sources, such as string lights, lanterns, or solar-powered lamps, helps to make a space feel larger and more inviting,” she said.
TURNING THE TABLE
Hudson said outdoor furniture should be slimline or multifunctional to avoid making the space feel crowded.
“To maximize space, prioritize functionality and organization,” she said.
“Opt for furniture that serves multiple purposes, such as storage benches or coffee tables with built-in compartments.
Outdoor mirrors can work wonders in creating the perception of depth.

“Consider using foldable or stackable furniture that can be easily stored away when not in use, allowing you to free up valuable space for other activities.”
“A compact dining set with chairs that can be tucked neatly under the table when not in use, or folding chairs that can be easily stored away, are excellent choices,” she added.
ENDLESS SPACE
“Outdoor mirrors can work wonders in creating the perception of depth,” Hudson said.
“Placing them strategically on a wall or fence can make the patio feel more open and airy, adding depth without physically expanding your area.”
BLOOMING IDEA
She recommended creating a cohesive feel by decorating with simple accessories while relying on plants for color.
“Clean lines and minimalist designs create a sense of openness, preventing the patio from feeling overcrowded,” she said.
“Take advantage of vertical space by installing wall-mounted shelves or hanging planters to keep the floor clear and draw the eye upwards, making the area feel taller and more expansive,” Hudson added.
“Choose plants with variegated foliage or colorful blooms to inject vibrancy and life into the space.”
