I made £600 in 20 minutes cashing in on ‘credit’ from my insurance & energy companies – I didn’t have to haggle either
A WOMAN has left people impressed after revealing how she made almost £600 in just 20 minutes.
Caroline is a pro thrifter, and regularly saves herself money by picking up bargains in the charity shops.
Caroline took to TikTok to share how she managed to make £590 in just 20 minutes[/caption] She called her energy provider after realising she’s in credit with them[/caption]She’s also been showing how she makes some extra cash with her side hustles, and revealed her latest hack in a video on TikTok.
“In the space of 20 minutes today, I got myself £500 into my bank account and also saved £90,” she explained.
“And you could do this too.
“This is by doing two things that a lot of you rarely do, but you really should.”
Her money-making hack began when she received her car insurance renewal quote though, and they wanted to charge her an extra £100 a year.
“Did you know if you don’t challenge your car insurance company about their renewal quote, it will auto renew?” she continued.
“And basically over time, if you keep auto renewing, the price will go up and up and up and you’ll be paying far more than need to.”
Caroline explained that she then went onto a price comparison site, which took her “all of 10 minutes”.
“I found a cheaper deal,” she continued.
“I went back to my original provider and I said, can you match this?
“And they said, we can do better.
“And I saved myself £90!”
Next up was the £500.
Caroline explained that she “regularly keeps an eye on my energy provider app”.
How to haggle
IF you're new to haggling, there are a few easy tips you can try to make the process easier
- Do your research – if you’re going to be phoning your insurance company to contest a quote, make sure you’ve gone onto a comparison website to get some alternatives
- Be confident – you’re not going to get anywhere if you’re not confident. This is as important on the phone as it is in person. If you think it would be helpful, have a list of points you can refer to during the call
- Be honest – if you think you’re going to struggle paying a higher price, tell them. Most companies would rather you be honest, than be unable to pay your bill
- Consider a compromise – if the company makes you an offer you aren’t happy with, think about what you want and consider meeting them in the middle
“Today I saw that my account was in quite a lot of credit,” she said.
“So I contacted them and I said, can I be reimbursed some of this credit money?
“And they said, yes!”
Caroline concluded: “Contacting my car insurance company and contacting my energy provider company took 20 minutes in total, and therefore I have made, you could say, £590 today.
“So it’s worth checking these things out, and you could be saving and making money!”
People in the comments section were quick to praise Caroline for sharing the trick, with one writing: “Oooh yes, always haggle for insurance!”
“Definitely!” Caroline replied.
“Prior to a few years ago I never did – dread to think how much money I could have saved back then!”
“I haggle with almost everything… where I can,” another commented.
“I finally made the call to have a smart water meter fitted, as I currently pay for my water with my rent at £16 pw roughly, quoted £25 a month with a smart meter!” a third added.
