INTERVIEW: Mayor Boulet talks about first 100 days
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – Following her first 100 days in office, Lafayette Mayor-President Monique Blanco Boulet reflects on some of the major accomplishments she feels her administration is handling.
News 10 had an exclusive one-on-one sit down with the Mayor-President, taking an in-depth look at more pressing issues her administration is addressing and resolving.
Mayor Boulet's top priority in her first 100 days in office was putting together a strong team. While tackling issues both challenging and simple, Boulet says it's been fun working alongside good people who want to serve.
Boulet says what makes a strong team is getting people who understand LCG, government and reestablishing financial standards and processes. She says she's not surprised with some of the inherited issues her administration needed to address and resolve. "We found what we expected to find, and it was a little messy, but through a lot of tedious work that is still going on today, we are stabilizing things, making them assessment, trying to understand."
Boulet says she's brought in a group of people with experience who can assess city projects that have been both necessary and unnecessary. She says, she's also been working to address issues surrounding public safety when it comes to the number of police officers on administrative leave due to officer involved shootings. "We are talking to the leadership to try to understand, you know, is this a trend or not and how do we do this. It is concerning to me as mayor. I will say that."
She says there are also conversations being had on if the new budget process will allow for park police to be brought back.
Another thing Boulet address are some of the lawsuits her administration dropped. Among them, the lawsuit against the Army Corps of Engineers. She says this lawsuit was not productive when trying to build credibility with the Corps of Engineers and get permits. "Settling that lawsuit with the corps of engineers was critical in our negotiated actions and how we move forward from a drainage perspective," says Boulet.
With everything her administration is facing, she feels they are on the right track and looks forward to the next 100 days to see what they can accomplish. "I think we are we still have some cleanup to do, but all of us are really ready to move forward to kind of turn that corner."
