Baltimore Sun high school Athletes of the Week (April 29-May 5): Boys’ Latin’s Matt Higgins and Patterson Mill’s Ava Ward
Each week, The Baltimore Sun will recognize one high school player from a boys sport and one from a girls sport for their athletic achievements.
Boys sport Athlete of the Week: Matt Higgins, Boys’ Latin, lacrosse
Led by Matt Higgins’ consistently fine play on attack, the No. 1 Lakers (12-2) wrapped up first place in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference with wins over Gilman and Severn last week. In Tuesday’s 13-6 win over the No. 5 Greyhounds, Higgins enjoyed a three-goal, three-assist performance. He followed with two goals and five assists as the Lakers claimed a 14-5 win over Severn on Saturday to improve to 8-1 in conference play. For the season, Higgins has 34 goals and 29 assists.
Girls sport Athlete of the Week: Ava Ward, Patterson Mill, softball
The sophomore third baseman was in the middle off all the Huskies’ success last week and there was plenty of it with the team winning four games in as many days. From Tuesday through Friday, Patterson Mill beat Carver A&T, Bo Manor, Century and Harford Tech with Ward going 9-for-12 with one home run, one double, six RBIs and three runs scored. In her second season on varsity, she’s batting .410 with 16 RBIs and nine runs. At third base, she has a .906 fielding percentage.
