Climate education, indoors and out, is a necessity | READER COMMENTARY
It was heartening to see the positive letter to the editor about Gov. Wes Moore’s new executive order to establish the Maryland Outdoor Learning Partnership, but we need to do more to prepare our students for the changing world and the green economy (“Maryland’s future depends on outdoor learning,” May 2). We must ensure that climate education is taught in every school and on every curriculum from kindergarten to 12th grade.
EARTHDAY.ORG has been championing this position for over 50 years, and we continue to do so to help us mitigate and cope with the climate crisis we have created. We need to be honest with our students and teach them the facts, integrated across multiple disciplines and not just science.
To that end, we released a report in last month, available on our website, outlining why we think climate education is so beneficial on so many levels. It creates awareness, fosters honesty, eases student anxiety about the climate crisis and prepares them for future jobs in the green economy. We hope that teaching children outdoors is just a first step in the right direction toward climate education for all students globally and in all schools.
