US News releases 2024 state rankings: Where does NY fall?
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- U.S. News & World Report has released its 2024 Best States rankings. The publication looked at a range of categories across all 50 states to see how states best serve their citizens.
U.S. News looked at several metrics to determine the rankings including health care, education, economy, infrastructure, opportunity, fiscal stability, crime and corrections, and natural environment. Each category was then assigned a weight based on the average of three years of data from recent national surveys of a total of 70,000 people.
Overall, U.S. News found Utah to be the best state in the country as it ranked in the top 20 of seven of the categories. New Hampshire was ranked second, with Nebraska coming in third.
So where did New York fall this year? Out of the 50 states, New York was ranked 23rd, three positions lower than in 2023. Here’s how the state ranked in each category:
- Health care: 8th
- Education: 12th
- Economy: 44th
- Infrastructure: 29th
- Opportunity: 49th
- Fiscal stability: 23rd
- Crime and corrections: 24th
- Natural environment: 5th
Rounding out the bottom of the list were Mississippi, New Mexico, and Louisiana. You can view the full 2024 rankings on the U.S. News & World Report website.
