Jennifer Lopez’s hairstylist reveals exactly how to get her Met Gala messy bun – including a few $7 drugstore buys
JENNIFER Lopez was quite the scene-stealer at Monday night’s Met Gala, where she paved the way as one of this year’s co-chairs.
And while most people are sure to be priced out of copying her designer gown, her exact hairstyle is totally accessible.
Jennifer Lopez graced the Met Gala this year in a Schiaparelli number styled by Rob Zangardi[/caption] The ethereal number was designed by Daniel Roseberry[/caption]This year’s event celebrated the Costume Institute’s new exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, titled Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.
The dress code for the night was The Garden of Time, and JLo, 54, delivered in a dazzling custom Schiaparelli couture gown.
Designed by Daniel Roseberry, the stunningly stylish number featured more than 2,500,000 silver foil bugles and beads, according to WWD.
It was hand-embroidered with silver pearls and rhinestones and took more than 800 hours to create.
And that was just the time it went into making the dress.
Naturally, JLo herself took quite a bit more time getting ready on the big day, and she turned to hairstylist Lorenzo Martin to give her a red-carpet-worthy updo.
Contrasting such a glamorous gown, Martin went an unusual route and gave the singer a classic messy bun.
“Only Jennifer Lopez could get away with wearing a messy bun to the Met Gala,” Allure gushed.
While Martin’s fee for crafting a coif is likely quite high, the products he used are accessible — and he helpfully shared everything in his arsenal.
Martin revealed his step-by-step process for recreating the look at home using several products from Tresemme and tools from Tangle Teezer.
Every single one of the Tresemme products he used is available for $6.99 at Target, while the two brushes are a budget-friendly $16.99 and $13.99 each from Ulta Beauty.
With dress and hair in place, JLo finished off her look with peep-toe platform sandals, a light gold clutch, and diamond jewelry.
According to Allure, she turned to nail artist Tom Bachik for her manicure.
How to get JLo's Met Gala hair
Lorenzo Martin, who styled Lopez's hair for the 2024 Met Gala, revealed how to get the look.
- Step 1: On wet hair, apply the Tresemme Mousse Keratin Smooth Hydrating Hair Treatment, $6.99, to roots.
- Step 2: Begin rough drying with the Styling Concentrator attachment of the Shark FlexStyle Sparkle Air Styling & Drying System in Black Diamond, $349.99. Dry until damp.
- Step 3: Take small sections and wrap your hair around the 1.25” Auto-Wrap Curler attachments to give it texture.
- “Step 4: Mix a dime-size of Tresemmé Weightless Silk Serum, Tresemme Freeze Hold Hairspray, and Tresemme Mega Control Hair Gel, $6.99 each, together. Run fingers throughout hair.
- Step 5: Create a high pony using Tangle Teezer The Ultimate Styler Hairbrush, $16.99.
- Step 6: Tease the ponytail with Tangle Teezer The Ultimate Teaser Backcombing Hairbrush, $13.99, to make hair look messy. The messier the better.
- Step 7: Secure with a brown medium hair elastic at the top of your head. On the last wrap, pull the hair halfway through, creating a loop.
- Step 7: Pin the loop above the crown with a large bobby pin.
- Step 8: Secure any extra hair loosely into the bun.
- Step 9: Spray Tresemme Extra Hold Hair Spray to complete the look.
“I applied CND’s pre-shaped coffin tips and refined them to a medium-length almond shape,” he told the outlet.
“I created a tonal shade to play off her skin tone by adding a bit of Shellac Top Coat to Flowerbed Folly, softening it to a semi-sheer color.”
He finished with CND’s Pearl Obsession and some Aquaphor on her cuticles.

“She will look sophisticated but sexy by wearing a glittery or sparkly floor-length silhouette-shaped gown,” she told The U.S. Sun.
“Her look at the Met Gala will undoubtedly be another memorable one. It will likely be of sex-siren status.
“JLo continues to choose elegant and sophisticated styles that fully embrace her iconic fashion status.
“Whatever she chooses for the Met Gala will be far removed from her Jenny From The Block days.”
