Royals Rumblings - News for May 6, 2024
Catch the Royals!
Jaylon Thompson writes about a promising start from Daniel Lynch IV.
Lynch indeed settled in. He displayed the renewed slider that was a point of emphasis in Triple-A. The pitch registered six swings and four whiffs, per Baseball Savant.
“I thought it was way better than it has been in the past,” Lynch said of his slider. “I still have some work to do with that, but I think it’s on the right track.”
But the Royals let the game slip away on Sunday.
“It’s a tough loss,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “Had a 2-0 lead going to the eighth and a lot will be made of the last couple of innings.
“We didn’t do a lot to expand in the middle innings. Credit to (Texas starting pitcher Jon) Gray and (middle reliever Kirby) Yates to keep us right where we were.”
Anne Rogers writes about Friday’s big inning to defeat the Rangers.
“This offense,” starter Brady Singer, who allowed one run in six innings with eight strikeouts, said with a grin. “Never had a doubt that we were going to break through and get those runs. It’s a blast to watch.
“This team is so much fun to be around. We’re never out of it.”
Michael Wacha was disappointing after giving up seven runs on Saturday.
“It’s a frustrating one for sure,” Wacha said. “Felt like I didn’t really set the tone the way a starting pitcher tries to do for their club that night. Feel like I got in some bad counts and was forced to throw it over the plate. They found the barrel. Whenever I did execute, it seemed like they were still able to find holes at times. Just a frustrating one, for sure.”
Anne also has an update on Alec Marsh.
He’s been throwing bullpens and made a rehab start with Triple-A Omaha on May 5, tossing four scoreless innings with six strikeouts and one walk. Assuming he recovers fine from that start, he should be in line to return to the Royals’ rotation when his spot comes up again on May 10.
Sam McDowell writes about Salvy’s amazing start.
Last summer, the Royals took calls on Perez at the trade deadline, at least one discussion advancing far enough that they notified him of it. But before it made it that far, Perez requested a meeting with Picollo. That could have gone one of two ways: a demand to stay (with the 10-and-5 rights giving him trade veto power) or a demand to go.
Or, apparently, a third option: It wasn’t a demand at all.
It was a question.
What’s the plan? How far away are we?
“He’s always been clear that he just wants to win, and that his preference is to do it here,” Picollo said. “I was honest with him. I told him I’d love to say it will be next year, and that between the development of our own players and being able to access and acquire other players, a lot of things have to happen.”
