Beatrice gives update on Fergie’s cancer diagnosis in first ever live TV interview
Sarah Ferguson is ‘thriving’ after getting the ‘all clear’ following treatment for breast and skin cancers, Princess Beatrice has said.
Beatrice used her first live TV interview to share an update on her mother’s wellbeing since receiving two troubling diagnoses over the past year.
Speaking via video-link from New York’s Empire State Building, she told ITV’s This Morning programme how the Duchess of York has fared since.
The Duchess, 64, was diagnosed with breast cancer last summer and later had a mastectomy to address it.
During later reconstructive surgery, she had several moles removed and analysed, and one was confirmed to be cancerous.
The last official update on her health came in January when a spokesperson said she was still ‘undergoing further investigations to ensure that this has been caught in the early stages’.
Asked how Ferguson, who was married to Prince Andrew from 1986 to 1996, is doing now, Beatrice said her mother is ‘really well’.
‘She’s such a phenomenal icon. As a mum she’s been amazing.
‘She’s been through so much and her sense of purpose and resilience really keeps me going.
‘She’s doing really well, thank you Josie. She had a bumpy health scare last year but she’s all clear now.
‘But I think at 64, she’s thriving, she’s been through so much, but now she’s coming into her own.
‘We are just reminded when any parent or individual has a health scenario, you really need to get the checks you need as early as you possibly can.
‘And both my sister and I are so proud of her for taking those steps to get those checks.
‘We’re really lucky in the UK to make sure you can get those checks as best as you can.
‘Hopefully, we can be there to support each other when anyone goes through a health scare.
‘There’s nothing more important than family.’
Beatrice’s call for early cancer checks came shortly after the announcement that CoppaFeel! founder Kris Hallenga has died.
Kris was a leading advocate for awareness around breast cancer and techniques people can use at home to check for growths.
Charities and doctors also urge people to take steps to identify potential signs of skin cancer.
The Duchess’ spokesperson previously said: ‘She believes her experience underlines the importance of checking the size, shape, colour and texture and emergence of new moles that can be a sign of melanoma.’
