Protests enter second day in Darayim, Badakhshan, Afghanistan
People protests in Badakhshan’s Darayim district entered their second day on Saturday, May 4th.
Residents claim the Taliban took five community leaders under the pretext of discussing protesters’ demands, but their fate remains unknown. Residents express concern over the detention of these five community leaders.
Anti-Taliban protests in Darayim, Badakhshan, began on Friday, May 3rd; according to Badakhshan residents, after initial protests, Taliban members resorted to shooting at the people to suppress them, resulting in at least one fatality.
Protesters stated that after the death of this individual, Darayim residents continued their march.
According to the report, demonstrations began when Taliban members entered the house area under the name of destroying poppy fields but instead “molested women in their homes.”
Local Taliban authorities confirmed one dead in these protests.
Meanwhile, videos circulating on social media show protesters in Badakhshan saying they do not want the Taliban’s “Islamic Emirate” in this province.
In addition, protesters in Darayim, Badakhshan, alleging that Taliban members harass and intimidate the people of this district street by street and house by house.
One protester said even women are being harassed, and the Taliban violate the “honour, religion, and privacy” of the people.
These protesters accuse the Taliban of demolishing people’s homes and committing oppression and injustice against the people.
As of now, Taliban officials in Kabul have not yet responded to the protesters in Badakhshan’s Darayim district.
