Peterson Makes Rehab Start, Sproat Shines In Brooklyn Victory

David Peterson made his second rehab start down in Port St Lucie, while top 30 prospect Brandon Sproat gave another phenomenal performance for Brooklyn as Mets affiliates won two out of four games on the night.

Syracuse struggled on both sides of the ball, only scoring a single run while allowing 10 in a blowout loss. An RBI single by Carlos Cortes in the sixth inning gave the Mets the lead, which was quickly relinquished in the bottom of the frame when Rochester had eight cross the plate. An additional two Red Wings runs in the eighth innings put the finishing touches on the Rochester victory.

Mark Vientos was pulled from the game in the second inning after being hit by a pitch in his first at-bat. Fresh off his week stint with the major league club, Vientos would be a massive loss for the Syracuse offense and stunt his growth at the hot corner as he attempts to get back to Queens.

Just called up from Binghamton earlier in the day, Justin Jarvis threw a quality outing in his first Syracuse appearance of the year. While allowing seven baserunners, Jarvis kept a clean sheet via weak groundballs and clutch pitching while runners were in scoring position. David Griffin was another story – Rochester teed off on the 27-year-old right-hander, accumulating eight runs and nine hits in only an inning and two-thirds. Shintaro Fujinami demonstrated his inability to limit walks when he doesn’t have complete command over his pitches, giving up four free passes to Rochester batters. Positional player Yolmer Sánchez got to finish the game off due to the ugly nature of the ball game.

Binghamton only needed one inning to do all their damage – dominating the Hartford pitching in the seventh inning for seven runs. Hits from JT Schwartz and Rowdey Jordan brought home runs, along with Matteo Gil and Young reaching due to a fielder’s choice and fielding error, respectively.

Cameron Foster was steady for the Rumble Ponies again, going the furthest into the game he has gone this season for Binghamton. Foster gave up no runs on five hits in his six innings on the mound, lowering his season ERA to 3.57 and WHIP to 1.47. Juarez and Clenney closed the game, allowing both Hartford runs (only one earned) while striking out three Yard Goat batters.

Runs in the first and seventh innings were all the Cyclones needed to win their Friday evening matchup with Aberdeen. Stanley Consuegra provided a run-scoring hit, bringing his season RBI total up to 10. The new De Los Santos in Brooklyn, Jefrey, brought home the Cyclones’ other run in the seventh inning.

Ryan Clifford continues to draw walks, allowing him to keep his on-base percentage elite (.427). Expect his power stroke to return once he leaves the highly pitcher-friendly Maimonides Park in Coney Island and rises to Double A-Binghamton. Clifford was a prolific power-hitter for High-A Asheville (also in the South Atlantic League) last season, where he hit 16 homers in only 58 games.

The night’s storyline was elite pitching from Mets’ top prospect and former Florida Gator Brandon Sproat. En route to lowering his Brooklyn ERA to 0.92, Sproat held Aberdeen to a one measly hit while striking out eight IronBirds. Although he has allowed at least one walk in every start this season, Sproat’s dominant stuff and continued command development should excite all Mets fans about his future in Flushing.

In a night headlined by a rehab start from a big league starter, St. Lucie’s offense failed to respond to a late push by the Hammerheads. After going up 3-0 in the third inning, the Mets offense stalled and never got rolling again. Jupiter would go on to score six unanswered runs and win the ballgame.

Boston Baro continued his hot streak after his delayed start to the season due to a hamate injury. His third-inning triple collected two RBIs, raising his OPS to 1.056.

Southpaw David Peterson started the game for St. Lucie in his second rehab start on his road to recovery from his January hip surgery. After dominating in his first start, Peterson followed up with another start expected from a major league pitcher – no runs on one hit while striking four batters. Kade Morris came in as the first relief pitcher and did not have his typical stuff, allowing eight runs (only four earned) while walking a season-high four batters. Jawilme Ramirez finished the game for St. Lucie, conceding zero hits or runs in his inning and two-thirds of work, but the damage was already done.
